🎨🖥 The power of creativity and imagination is on show at Townsville University Hospital.
Digital artworks created by paediatric patients and hospital school students are part of a special exhibition which was displayed at the Drill Hall Studio and is now hanging proudly at TUH.
Digital artist Danya Pilchowski encouraged our littlest patients to use their imaginations to create a superhero character and story.
Danya said the ‘I am a Superhero’ project was inspired by her own health struggles as a child.
“I started creating digital art when I became unwell in high school and was bedridden for a number of years,” she said.
“A hospital stay can be very isolating and emotional for a child and the workshops gave them a creative and social outlet. You really see some children open up through the process and so many of them had a clear interest and talent in art.”
Paediatric nurse unit manager Lynda Briggs said the activity helped keep the little ones engaged and active during their stay in hospital.
“Activities like this are very important for their developing brains.”

Due to the transient nature of the hospital school we've had fewer kids than we have funding and equipment for. To reach even more with the fun of digital art, with the support of the Brighter Lives Foundation I've also been visiting the kids in the general pediatrics ward.

I’m proud to announce “I’m A Superhero!” An exhibition of the illustrated works of the townsville university hospital school students.
Come join us at The Drill Hall Studio on the 8th of September at 6:00pm for the exhibition opening!
In this exhibition discover the unique superhero stories written and illustrated by the Townsville University Hospital School students during the ‘I’m a Superhero’ project, along with artworks from patients in the Paediatrics Ward.
Over the past 6 weeks, the students have worked with professional Children’s Books Illustrator and Digital Art Teacher Danya Pilchowski to explore their creativity and develop their digital art skills, creating a superhero story where they are their own superhero!
Being bed-bound for extended periods during their teenage years, Danya has first-hand experience on how Digital Art can be a lifeline. Being able to draw while lying down allowed Danya to express themselves, build skills and confidence, and have a space to forget and have fun. Danya is excited to have shared this opportunity with other kids that deal with health challenges.
Enjoy action packed art and discover the heroism of our youth as they fight their monsters.
Join us on opening night! Refreshments provided.
This project is proudly supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund, The Townsville City Council The Queensland Government, Messages On Hold Townsville, Joyce Mayne and the Drill Hall Studio.
Thank you for all your support in making this possible.

It was great to see what everyone came up with for page 2 of your super hero adventure. Week 2 was all about how you use your superpower when your not saving the world! Do you levitate chips to you? Keep your house cold with your ice powers? Use your super speed to zoom around doing everything you want?

Feels good to pick up a paint brush and practice some landscapes with gouache paint and watercolour.
Been a while since I've used these mediums.
Amazing work everyone! Week one the kids had fun creating the first page in their superhero story! They picked their powers, designed their superhero outfit while learning the foundations of using the digital art medium.
It was a lot of fun! Can’t wait for week 2 to see how their story’s develop.
