Rangers recently came across a sad scene on the western beach of K’gari (Fraser Island) Great Sandy National Park—a drowned green turtle, entangled in a crab pot’s float line.

Entanglement in marine debris like crab pots is one of the major threats to marine turtles, along with climate change impacts.

Maintaining healthy marine turtle populations is important for our biodiversity, culture, social values, and the tourism economy.

Just imagine a trip out on the water without seeing a friendly turtle’s face pop up near the boat 😔

QPWS Rangers need your help to protect our parks and the animals that live there, like marine turtles.

Crabbers can help by:
👉 only using pots that weigh 3kg or more, so it sits on the sea floor and does not drift around
👉 using a weighted or non-buoyant line so it hangs below the water’s surface
👉 adding a vertical line to pots with wide openings to reduce a turtle’s chances of entering
👉 checking your pots regularly once installed.

Remember to always report stranded, entangled, injured, sick or dead marine turtles to 1300 130 372.
