Women in Healthcare.

Professor Catriona McLean (Neuropathologist, Director of Anatomical Pathology at The Alfred and Director of the Victorian Brain Bank at The Florey Institute) and Ms Emily Galea (Registered Nurse and Founding Director at Medical Sphere).

In 2019, Emily and Catriona worked side-by-side with the rest of the team to set up the first Brain Cancer biobank at The Alfred. In 2023, they worked together to establish the first national biobank for patients with a Genetic Muscle Disease.

With International Women’s Day approaching, we asked Catriona (who has worked for 40 years as a doctor) and Emily (who has worked for 10 years as a nurse) what this day means to them.

Catriona: I think women make fantastic leaders and doctors. They listen, they work well as a team and have the ability to reach a common goal. In medicine there are often many clinicians involved in patient care, so it is important to have clear communication and work to achieve the best possible outcome for our patients.

Emily: when women support each other, incredible things happen. I feel lucky to work with and be mentored by Catriona. I agree that women work well as a team (particularly in a medical crisis) and are great communicators and listeners. I have seen huge compassion shown to the patients and families that they care for.

Have you ever wondered what our process is?.. Well, here are steps ⬇️.

The job:

- Website Rebuild
- 4x Content Production Days and Post Production
- Brand Development

Firstly, a discovery session so, we can gain an understanding of you and required tasks.

We then provide you an agreement with costs. Once both parties have agreed- including services, meetings and deadlines- we can move to the next steps.

Depending on the job and for this one, we ask for your logo files, and other branding elements, login to your website and social accounts, existing content bank and new team profiles. Now, if you haven’t got this well organised at present, handy tip, get it sorted ☺️.

For production days, planning is so important! We put together a presentation with a mood board, examples, shoot list, filming locations, etc for your approval. This is what we use on the production days.

Production days take place then post production (editing footage) and then implementing this into your channels e.g. your website and social media accounts.

If you have any questions about how we do it at Medical Sphere, send us a message!

📣NEW BLOG.

One reason Emily started Medical Sphere was to help bridge the communication gap between medical experts, their patients, and their families. Good communication is essential to full-spectrum patient care.

One of the most powerful stories we have heard about the impact of communication on patient treatment and care was told to Emily by Mr Boris Struk (someone she works with and immensely admires) and she asked him to write it. See link in our bio and click blog to read it.

📣 NEW BLOG.

Emily and Boris - Medical Sphere My son Ryan was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in October 1983. I remember the neurologist’s words: “Mr Struk, go home, enjoy Ryan he’ll be dead by the time he’s fourteen or fifteen.”. Ryan was three years old.

A proud moment in Emily’s family this week.

A centre named after her Grandfather for his 30 years volunteer service to the centre and disability sector.

Thank you for presenting this plaque at the naming ceremony.

Her oldest uncle has taken over his role on the board to continue the family legacy.

Incoming… new blog posts.

One of the reasons Medical Sphere started was because Emily could see how busy medical professionals were solving clinical problems that they lacked the time (and sometimes skill) to communicate beyond their own sphere: to patients and families.

In her role as a medical professional, she must communicate to patients suffering rare and deadly diseases and their families about current research and get the right the balance of “hype v. hope.”

On the theme of communication, we asked Mr Boris Struk- someone Emily has worked with and immensely admires- to write about his journey once receiving his son’s diagnosis in 1983.

Raw, powerful and from the heart 💗- we can’t wait to share.

Remembrance Day.

On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after fours years of horrific conflict. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, Germany signed an Armistice, in a railway carriage in France (swipe to see image) that brought an end to the First World War.

Today, we pause to remember those who served, sacrificed and the millions who died in war to make the world a better place for us.

Lest We Forget.

CASE STUDY.

With an increasing number of referrals to Mr Alam (Thoracic Surgeon) and team for Slipping Rib Syndrome (SRS), it was decided to develop a standalone website.

The design was carefully planned to ensure consistent branding and the right synergy between their other websites to ensure patients and referrers can easily navigate.

Importantly, we worked together to set up a smooth referral and comms pathway for patients and referrers.

Our services:

✔️ Copywriting
✔️ Photos
✔️ Medical Diagrams
✔️ Website
✔️ Referral and comms pathway

Medical Diagrams.

The use of images to explain conditions to patients is often very important.

We designed these for Mr Naveed Alam to use when he is explaining Slipping Rib Syndrome (SRS) and treatment options to patients.

Image one highlights the normal anatomy of the ribcage, image two shows the effected area and last post-surgery.

On his website we will use circles, arrows and text to further explain and educate.

Final website due to launch soon!

Our Founding Director (aka Catwoman) made the for National Superhero Week- raising money and awareness for muscular dystrophy .

Well done to the Muscle Research Department at Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.

Did you know? Emily is a part-time nurse on the team at and consenting patients with muscle disease for research around Australia, collecting blood samples for scientists to create artificial stem cell lines for experiments and overseeing the ethical and legal requirements of the work.

We are very proud👏💫

Stem Cell Medicine Symposium 2023

What an insightful two days covering a variety of topics:

- regenerative medicine
- drug discovery
- disease modelling
- putting ethics into practice
- science meets parliament
- engagement beyond the lab
- gene therapy
- cancer

These scientists work never cease to amaze us!

What really resonated with our why and what we do to support doctors and scientists, was this:

1) the importance of the interaction between impacted parents, scientists and “lay”

2) “Hype” vs. “hope” in families who have a child with a deadly disease and, a study is available. The importance of communication (in all forms) to not create unrealistic hope

3) In this rapidly evolving digital world, the importance of using online platforms to communicate health information (in the right way)

4) Using online platforms to communicate research to encourage collaborative work
