It's the start of Learning Disability Week 2024! 🌟 It's crucial to help people overcome these challenges in a way that uplifts and empowers them. You may have heard of some of these learning disabilities. Dyslexia? Reading challenges. Having difficulty with numbers - Dyscalculia. ADHD and Autism are more widely known learning disabilities. Effective strategies include Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), which tailor learning strategies to meet specific needs. Assistive technology, such as text-to-speech software, audiobooks, and graphic organizers, can also be incredibly helpful! Specialized tutoring offers focused, one-on-one instruction in areas of difficulty, while behavioral therapy supports those with ADHD and Autism to improve social skills and behavior management. Let's chat about Active Support! Did you know that 17% of people with disabilities aged 15–64 experience social isolation, compared to 8.7% without disabilities? Active Support is a method that ensures individuals receive the right support to lead engaging and fulfilling lives. It focuses on enabling them to enjoy activities, develop skills, achieve success, and feel included in their communities. Here are the four essential steps to providing active support: 1. Every moment has potential: Every task, activity, or interaction presents opportunities to involve the person. 2. Graded assistance for success: Provide the appropriate type and level of support to help the person succeed. 3. Maximizing choice and control: Offer choices to empower the individual. 4. Little and often: Encourage trying new things through consistent support. Why is Active Support crucial? - It enhances quality of life through person-centered practices. - Active Support, Person-Centered Planning, and Positive Behavior Support are all part of person-centered practices. - Being person-centered means prioritizing the individual in every aspect of support.
