The MEAO service honoured the Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel who served in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. As Australia’s longest military engagement, from 2001 to 2021, the MEAO holds great importance.

This year the commemorative service for Korean Veterans’ Day will take place at 11.00 am Saturday 27 July at the Korean Memorial in the Wagga Wagga Victory Memorial Gardens.

On this day, we recognise almost 18,000 ADF personnel who served in the war, including 340 who lost their lives and 29 who became prisoners of war. Despite its’ importance, the Korean War is often referred to as the ‘forgotten war,’ due to occurring between two high profile conflicts, World War II and the Vietnam War.

The conflict began on 25 June 1950 and formally ended on 27 July 1953 when an armistice was signed. This is the reason why the commemorative service for Korean Veterans’ Day is held on 27 July each year.
