🦋 Today, 6th May, is International No Diet Day 🦋
This is a day dear to our hearts here at Elder Medical.
As a team of Millenial mums & dads, who have grown-up immersed in diet-culture, we have experienced the damage it can do.
It’s a day to celebrate and accept all bodies, in all forms of diversity.
A day to remember and focus on why we fight against body discrimination, weight stigma, diet culture and fat phobia.
A day to leave the food rules at home and eat what you want, when you want, because you enjoy it.
No guilt, no bad feelings, no obsessions.
A day to just… be. ✨

This week we are challenging you and ourselves to get up early one day this week to help raise awareness for Early Onset Dementia. See below how to get involved and feel free to share your posts with us or tag us.
Early for Early Campaign: Raising Awareness of Early Onset Dementia
The campaign was started by Alzheimer's Australia Tasmania to put a spotlight on early onset dementia.
Roughly 25,000 people are living with early (or younger) onset dementia in Australia. Some as young as in their 30s.
Early onset dementia does not just affect memory but also people's ability to perform everyday tasks (such as planning a meal) and their social, emotional and financial well-being. The Younger Onset Dementia Key Worker Program in Tasmania began this campaign to increase community awareness and knowledge of early onset dementia. The program also aims to address key issues with funds raised from the campaign, such as appropriate accommodation for younger people and social support for people living with the illness.
The idea:
1. Wake up early, before 7am (try and catch the sunrise!)
2. Take a picture/selfie in a great location, anywhere in the world
3. Post it on Instagram/Facebook with the hashtag and tag
4. Nominate two other people to do the same thing!
Thank you for your support!

Other essential nutrients for bones🦴🦴🦴🦴
Dairy foods are also a good source of protein, another nutrient which plays an important role in bone health as it helps build and repair bone tissue and muscles. As people become older, protein requirements increase to help maintain bone and muscle mass and reduce hip fractures.14
🦴🦴🦴
As well as being rich in calcium and protein, milk, cheese and yoghurt each contain a unique matrix of other nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium and zinc that work together to support healthy bones. It is for this reason the consumption of dairy foods over calcium supplementation is preferable.15
Studies have shown calcium from dairy foods has greater effects than equivalent calcium supplements on bone mineral density – a marker of bone strength.16 Scientists have suggested that the protein and lactose in dairy may enhance calcium balance by promoting absorption.
🥛🧀
Other non-dairy sources of calcium can be consumed, such as green leafy vegetables, nuts and cereals, however some plant foods contain phytates and oxalates that can interfere with calcium absorption.17
🥦🥬🫘🥜
Are you over 50?
Did you know that the dairy food group recommendations jump for women once they hit 50 and men once they hit 70!
Dairy foods, including milk, cheese and yoghurt, not only provide easy to absorb calcium for maintaining bone strength but also high quality protein for optimising muscle mass – both essential for healthy ageing.
🥛🧀
Age related bone loss occurs due to increased calcium losses by the kidneys and reduced calcium absorption in the gut.
Women are at greater risk of developing osteopenia (low bone density) and osteoporosis (brittle bones) because of the rapid drop in the hormone oestrogen during menopause which causes bone loss.
According to the Australian Dietary Guidelines, consuming milk, cheese and yoghurt is also linked to a reduced risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, some cancers and type 2 diabetes.
