Healthy Foods That Lift Your Mood Christine Ludke Naturopath😁

Healthy Foods That Lift Your Mood 😁

When you’re feeling down, it can be tempting to turn to food to lift your spirits. However, the sugary, high calorie treats that many people resort to have negative consequences of their own.

Thus, you may wonder whether any healthy foods can improve your mood.

Recently, research on the relationship between nutrition and mental health has been emerging. Yet, it’s important to note that mood can be influenced by many factors, such as stress, environment, poor sleep, genetics, mood disorders, and nutritional deficiencies.

Check out Christine Ludke Naturopath post on the Endocrine Gland and Hormones 🧬

Endocrine Gland and Hormones 🧬
Hormones are like the body’s communication system.

They take messages from one part of the body (the gland) to tell another part of the body (the target cell) to do something important. The endocrine glands influence reproduction, metabolism, growth and many other functions.

Simply put, the endocrine system is a network of glands that secrete chemicals called hormones to help your body function properly. Hormones are chemical signals that coordinate a range of bodily functions. The endocrine system works to regulate certain internal processes.

Each of the different types of glands in the endocrine system can benefit from our consumption of vitamins and supplements targeted at them. Following is a list of many of the consumables that can bolster our endocrine system, although a consultation with your physician or a licensed nutritionist should come first if you are looking at starting a new regimen:

Vitamin A. Needed for our immune system, hormone synthesis, and the production of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3).
Astragalus. Has been used for diarrhoea, fatigue, anorexia, upper respiratory infections, heart disease, hepatitis, fibromyalgia, per the National Institutes for Health.
Vitamin B12. Found in every cell in the body, it is needed for cellular metabolism and energy production.
Vitamin D. Levels of vitamin D often significantly lower in patients with hypothyroidism, although a direct connection still not determined.
Ginseng. Several varieties benefit the endocrine system, to include the thyroid.
Glutamine. Our body’s most plentiful amino acid, modest amounts can increase hormone's associated with growth a lot.
Glycine. Important for initiating normal patterns of REM sleep, per organiclifestylemagazine.com.
Holy basil. Normally consumed in tea form, its many benefits include helping with anxiety, adrenal fatigue, and blood sugar.
Iodine. An iodine deficiency can thwart the body’s natural detoxification and lead to hypothyroidism.
Kava kava. A root found on South Pacific Islands, it has a calming effect and has been used in treating convulsions.
L-arginine. An essential amino acid that can boost the release of Hormones.
Licorice root. Can help the thyroid and adrenal glands for those who have adrenal fatigue (low cortisol).
Reishi mushroom. Helps boost the immune system.
Selenium. Helps in the normalization of the thyroid hormone balance.
Zinc. Contributes to immune modulation.

Obesity linked to the gut and oral microbiome 🦠

The gut and oral microbiomes play a crucial role in obesity progression, according to recent research.
Evidence indicates a close association between obesity and both the bacterial community of the gut and the bacterial community of the oral cavity.

A recent research review highlighted the following recent findings in the link between microbiomes and obesity:

* Obese participants have a reduced bacteria richness and abundance in the gut, leading to gut dysbiosis and disturbances in metabolism.

* Reduction in some gut bacteria increases systemic inflammation and insulin resistance.

* Oral microbiome alterations can induce dysbiosis in the gut, leading to disruption of the intestinal barrier and systemic inflammation.

* The oral and gut microbiomes modulate metabolic balance via a complex cross-talking, involving the immune system, which regulates metabolic functions.

* As Body Mass Index (BMI) increases, the diversity in bacterial species in saliva and the sublingual plaque decreases.

Research suggests that therapeutic strategies to alter the gut microbiome can be used to improve and manage obesity, these include:
-Dietary changes
-Faecal microbiome transfer
-Probiotics and prebiotics

These strategies can restore balance to the gut microbiome and improve many functional aspects of obesity such as systemic inflammation, insulin resistance, and fat accumulation.

Obesity is a major risk factor for many lifestyle diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Genetics and lifestyle are known contributors in the onset and progression of obesity, and now recent studies indicate the link between dysbiosis of the gut and/or oral microbiomes with obesity progression.

The oral microbiome is a colony of microbes within the oral cavity and prevents the colonisation of the mouth, teeth and gums by pathogenic microbes. The research highlighted in the review also indicates the role of the oral microbiome in obesity due to its modulating effects on the gut microbiome.

This research indicates the importance of establishing and maintaining gut and oral microbiome health in the prevention and treatment of obesity.

“Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food”
-Hippocrates 📜

What you eat has massive effects on your overall health! Research shows that dietary habits influence disease risk. While certain foods may trigger chronic health conditions, others offer strong medicinal and protective qualities.

Whole, nutritious foods boast vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fibre, protein, and fat, all of which promote health and are key to optimal bodily function.Try to be mindful to choose local organic whole foods where possible to avoid pesticides and organic foods will have a higher nutritional value. When organic isn't possible you can soak your whole foods in some warm water and apple cinder vinegar or a baking soda solution. In a study published in Food Control, vegetables were soaked in vinegar for 20 minutes and also in a salt and water solution to remove chlorpyrifos, DDT, cypermethrin and chlorothalonil pesticides.

Berries, cruciferous vegetables, fatty fish, and mushrooms are just a selection of the foods that offer powerful medicinal properties. Check out some more options in the image below ⬇️

Exercise improves oral microbiome health ! 🤾‍♂️

Exercise promotes a healthy and diverse oral microbiome, according to a recent research review. The review highlights emerging evidence showing the potential link between exercise and the oral microbiome including its role in oral health.

Recent evidence suggests a link between the oral microbiome and the physiological response to exercise, including the following key findings:

+ Moderate regular exercise increases salivary immune protein levels in older people
+ Moderate exercise can reduce the risk of infections by increasing salivary cystatins levels, inhibiting the binding of bacteria to buccal epithelial cells and bacterial growth
+ Nitrate-reducing activity of oral bacteria was positively correlated with cardiovascular fitness of healthy people
Regular exercise may promote positive changes in the composition and activity of the oral microbiome
+ Increased sympathetic nerve activity through exercise can lead to an increase in salivary protein expression and more mucoid saliva
+ High intensity exercise raises the concentration of salivary protein α-amylase, a marker of sympathetic stimulation
+ Moderate exercise increases the concentration of some salivary proteins but acute exercise can reduce the concentration of immune proteins
+ Host protection is compromised over the first period of exercise recovery due to lower count of immune proteins, an opportunity for viruses and bacteria to trigger infections
+ While the benefits of exercise for gut bacteria and overall health are already well established, new research shows that exercise-induced physical stress promotes a healthy and more diverse oral microbiome through some of the following mechanisms:
+ The effects of exercise on saliva are partly mediated through the autonomic nervous system
+ Alterations of the acid/base balance due to exercise reshapes the oral microbiome
+ Exercise promotes the synthesis of anti-inflammatory myokines, increased body temperature and epithelial permeability and changes in blood flow distribution.

Evidence indicates that dysbiosis of a person’s oral bacteria can instigate both oral and systemic diseases. Within the oral cavity, certain bacteria can cause dental diseases or conditions, but is also linked with systemic disease affecting the body’s wider systems.

The use of oral products containing pre or probiotics has been suggested as an approach to modulate the oral microbiome to help to protect host health. The authors of the review recommended further research into the effect of diet and specific nutrient components on the oral microbiome.

This study highlights the potential impact of the oral microbiome on your health. With evidence suggesting a link between the oral microbiome and a physiological response to exercise, a holistic approach can be taken to improve your oral microbiome through exercise, diet, lifestyle and the use of targeted probiotics.
