2 years of ccears and I finally get an insect 🪳
My client sort immediate medical attention when old matey decided to take up residence in their ear canal.
They assumed being given the all clear that it had all been removed but 7 months later I got that privilege.
Fortunately there was no evidence of damage, post or present to the ear canal or ear drum.
It did take my level of work satisfaction to a new high.

Cheers to another year done!
Thank you to you all.
Awesome company Belinda .
What a delicious meal and best bonbons ever 🤘🏼

Last year coming into spring and summer I saw an increase in people needing help unblocking their ears after suffering ear infections.

The warmer humid weather and spending more time in the water creates the perfect environment for fungal and bacterial infections in the ears.

Earplugs and drying the ear canals with a product like Dry Ears are some ways to help prevent infections.

Along with custom swim plugs (non vented), I've also started stocking a range of Doc's Proplugs (vented and non vented) and SurfEars 3.0.

I've got sample plugs with me when I'm in the clinic on Mondays if you want to try how they fit and feel in your ears.

Millie the chook was walking around like she was drunk and falling over. Google searches had her with all sorts of horrible things but the lovely Dr Karen from Angourie road vets diagnosed it as an ear infection!

The inner ear plays a key role in both our hearing and our balance. Inflammation to this area can disrupt sensory information from the ear getting to the brain and one of the main symptoms is loss of balance and vertigo.

I also found out that unlike us humans, chickens have the ability to repair damage in the cochlea and have perfect hearing their entire life.

Millie is still wobbly but recovering well!

Thinking of going diving soon?
Every diver knows the importance of being able to equalise their ears.

If there is a complete blockage in the ear canal from wax it can trap air between it and the ear drum creating a space that can not be equalised and lead to severe pain and a possible burst ear drum.

Excess wax can also trap water in the ear canal which makes the perfect environment for bacteria growth and can lead to ear infections.

Don't let ear wax ruin your dive, holiday or most importantly, you're hearing!

Oowee!
We have a new CCEARS record!
Most importantly another happy client who's hearing much better!

Surfers ear.
This is something that I see a lot of in the clinic.
Exostoses and osteomas are benign boney growths that grow in the ear canal and are associated with cold water exposure. It's the ear canal's natural defence to protect the ear drum against low temperatures. This is the clients 'good ear' as the other was completely closed off causing a drop in their hearing.
Problems can arise if wax, debris and water become trapped in the ear canal and can cause recurrent infections. If this is the case then have a chat to your GP about what to do next. It may be a referral to an ENT for possible surgery.
As water temperatures begin to drop, consider wearing a hood or earplugs (blu tack is a cheap option) and dry the ear canals with a hair dryer after being in the water. (Alcohol based drops are good but over use can dry the ear canal of its natural oils and lead to itchiness and leave them prone to infections.) Keep those ears happy and healthy.

Ear canal irritation from a grass seed!

A cockroach crawled into Kirsty's ear on a camping trip. Here's what not to do if it happens to you 04/01/2023

I'm waiting for the day I can add insect to my list of removals...

A cockroach crawled into Kirsty's ear on a camping trip. Here's what not to do if it happens to you A horrified camper has had a "meltdown" after waking at 3am to find a large cockroach burrowing into her ear — and a doctor says it happens more often than people think.

What a day!!!
One client had an extra hearing aid dome in their canal (3 in one ear canal is still the record to beat!)

And then to top it off, my first home visit for the day delivered a wax plug the client was definitely happy to be rid of!
Job satisfaction 💯✅🤘

Ears feeling blocked up? Ear wax may not be the culprit...

The Eustachian tube (yoo-stay-shun) is the tube that connects your ears to your nose. Its role is to equalize the pressure on either side of the ear drum. Its normally in the closed position but opens when we sneeze, yarn or swallow. This allows air in and fluid out.

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction ETD is when the tube becomes blocked or inflamed and can cause a build up of mucus, fluid and a change in pressure.
Common causes are sinus inflammation, colds and allergies.
This may make your ear feel blocked, a feeling of fullness, drop in hearing or pain.

Over the counter decongestant sprays and antihistamines can help with mild symptoms, but best to seek advise from your GP or speak to a Registered Nurse at Healthdirect (1800 022 222, Healthdirect.gov.au) if symptoms last more then a few weeks or increase in severity.
