Bon dia -- Happy Fresco Friday!

After 4 years we can finally start sharing the works we did for Maria Convent for the new SISSTEM Faculty at the University of Aruba.

It's Fresco Friday -- So we will share our COLOR STUDY of the monument.

The Monumentenbureau of Aruba stipulates that all protected monuments must be restored to their original appearance.

We performed color analysis at 10 locations (!!)
This consisted out of carefully peeling each paint layer until arriving at the surface of the building material.

The result: A chromatic timeline with the dominant colours.

The Maria Convent monument consists out of 6 main volumes, constructed from 1919 to 1947.
This was performed for all volumes, on walls and windows.

The final color composition for the restoration plan is based on
_ stratigraphic analysis ,
_ historical photos ,
_ study of harmonic colour composition ,
_ relation between facade, window, interior and space.

We cannot wait to see the final result!

SNEAK PREVIEW

Here is our Presentation Case for our extensive research and design for restoration and sustainable rehabilitation of Maria Convent.
Many thanks to Estúdio Bulhufas for this gem!

We worked on the design of this project from 2019 - 2020. In a span of a few months (and during Covid) we managed to:
- Perform extensive historical research on this monument;
- Develop a restoration plan and the integral design of a sustainable new building extension;
- Created more than 120 technical drawings;
- Collaborate with interior designers to have/custom make bespoke sustainable furnitures fit for the Caribbean climate.

We are now making a condensed version which will include our research, designs and some reflective essays.

SISSTEM University of Aruba

SNEAK PREVIEW

We are publishing our research and design for the restoration and sustainable rehabilitation of Maria Convent into the new SISSTEM Faculty for the University of Aruba.

For this project we had many beautiful discoveries on the history of Aruba, the role of Dominican sisters on Aruba, the building techniques and material wealth —
all which add value to our shared heritage and contributes to the works of Monumentenbureau.

We are collaborating with the Lisbon-based bookbinding studio, Estúdio Bulhufas who specialise in making handmade books using manual techniques and sustainable materials. We have just received this little linnen gem!

Coffey Architects uses "serious architectural element" to create playful dog kennel Coffey Architects has created Fetch, an architectural kennel for its office dog Lucky that is made from a green gabion basket and filled with hundreds of tennis balls.

Why did we transform that concrete block in Caya Grandi? Watch the story behind the design of the historic building of Emanstraat!

We teamed up with artist & socio-cultural researcher Stephanie Claire van Heijningen and asked her to make a design for the façade of this forgotten building. Metadecor perforated this design on the metal panels, which tells the story of our island’s fight for independence and the identity of the Arubiano.
