Novruz is almost here! 🤩
Let's talk about some Novruz Traditions in Azerbaijan 🤭

In Novruz some girls gather in one place and open a ring fortune telling. One dish is taken and a water is poured in. Rings are taken out from fingers and put in that vessel. A girl from outside is called. If that girl gives a ring taken from vessel to right owner then all the wishes of the owner of that ring, girl will come true. If a ring is returned to wrong person, then it is put in the thread with needle. If the ring goes straight, that girl will be having no kids, if it shakes to the right-hand side, girl will be having many children, and if to the left side – she will be happy loved guy. 👀

Meals should definitely be cooked in every house on Novruz. The meals can be different, but one meal that should definitely be cooked is the Novruz pilaf. Dyeing and breaking eggs on Novruz days is a custom that both children and adults follow with great pleasure. Novruz makes the difference not only between various social strata of society, but even between generations transparent. Thanks to Novruz games, adults also become sincere like children. 😅
At night, young people make a bonfire in the mountains, hills and heights and remain awake until the morning. This tradition is called “meeting the Sun”. ☀️

But... Have you ever heard about Chovgan? 👀

Believed to have originated more than two millennia ago, with its first official mention in the 7th century, the game Chovkan has withstood the test of time. Put into context, the world’s favourite sport today, football, dates to the middle 1800s. This game, sharing resemblances to polo and played on horseback, is Azerbaijan’s most famous national sport. Named after a type of curved stick traditionally used to catch sheep, Chovgan is played by farmers on Karabakh horses. The skilled horsemen dress in a long, tight-fitting coat, a particular type of trousers and a traditional astrakhan hat. Deep cultural ties date back to the nomadic roots of their ancestors. In ancient times, playing Chovgan was a way to train the cavalry.

BTW in 2013 the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO included chovgan in the "List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding" at the 8th session. 😎

Lavender is grown in many parts of the world for a variety purposes: as an ornamental plant, as a herb for cuisine, and to extract essential oils for medicinal purposes – to produce remedies for the likes of anxiety, infections, burns, wounds, aches and hair loss. It’s also valued for its wonderful aromas and overall has so many uses. 💮


To discover the wide-ranging wonders of lavender, tourists in Azerbaijan can visit the lavender plantation in the north-western region of Gabala, nestling at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. The 30-hectare lavender farm lies amid stunning countryside in the village of Chukhur Gabala, also home to the fascinating archaeological ruins of ancient Gabala. The best time to go is when the fields are in full bloom between the end of May and the end of June.

Look at this beautiful temple! 😍

The Kurmuk temple was built on the ruins of an ancient Albanian monastery of the 1st-3rd centuries, on top of a green hill. The road to the temple leads through a dense forest, along a trodden path. As a result of archaeological excavations in 2006, the remains of ancient buildings were found on the territory of the temple. Also, it was revealed that the Albanian temple was subjected to restorations in various historical periods. Kurmuk is a place of pilgrimage for thousands of people that have adopted monotheistic religions — Christianity and Islam.

Pottery 🏺

One of the first materials on earth, which the man began to use, was clay. For several millennia it has served man, and during this time has found wide distribution in many areas of human life. The production of pottery, which served for the preparation and storage of food, and other products, exists and develops in Azerbaijan from time immemorial. Well-equipped pottery workshops were found during excavations in ancient fortresses of the times of Caucasian Albania in the territories of Gabala and Shamkir. And today in some regions pottery centers continue to operate, where ceramic products are handcrafted.⚱️

Miniatures 🖼️

Another branch of early Azerbaijani art is the miniature painting movement, which was also popular with the Ottoman Empires at the time for their transportability and rich use of colour and gild. Miniatures are paintings on small pieces of paper, as well as illustrations within books which express emotion and story from the artist. Miniature artists would often use symbolic colours to detail emotion and would derive certain positions and expressions in their characters in order to create a human connection to their audiences. This movement began in the 13th century and was at its height during the 15th century. 👓

One of the masterpieces of the medieval architecture of the ancient city is the residence of Shirvan governors – the Shirvanshahs' Palace Ensemble which has preserved its historic and architectural features up to date.📜

The Baku TV Tower 🗼

Built in 1996, is a free standing concrete telecommunications tower in Baku, Azerbaijan. With a height of 310 metres, it is the tallest structure in Azerbaijan and the tallest reinforced concrete building in Caucasus.😳

From mid-January to the end of February if you visit the Absheron National Park you can see the wintering along the Caspian coastline species such as flamingos.

This national park is like a bird watcher's paradise and if you are lucky enough, you can even see the smallest seal in the world here.

What a beautiful building! White and bright, curved lines, so futuristic…🧘🏻‍♀️

This is the masterpiece of of the most famous architects in the world, the first woman awarded with Pritzker Architecture Prize Zaha Hadid. This building was so spectacular, in 2014 she won the Design of the Year Award, making her the first woman to win the top prize in that competition.
Building was named after former President H.Aliyev and called Heydar Aliyev Culture Centre. There are different versions explaining the shape of the center. Some say it represents the waves of the Caspian Sea, others say it is the landscape of Azerbaijan. The most famous version though is that this is a part of Marilyn Monroe's white dress.👀
The Centre itself was constructed between 2007-2011, has 9 floors with different exhibitions, auditorium and library and don't tell anyone but the construction of the building costs 250 million USD!🤫

If you have a “must visit” list, you must add this cultural center to this list as well! 😎

Imagine building a window but not using nails or glue. Sounds impossible, yes?

But, here in Azerbaijan everything is possible! Well, almost everything...🤭

In the northwestern part of Azerbaijan there is a city called Sheki. The city of colors, the city of beauty… There are some craftsman with great skills in Sheki. They build windows using only pieces of glass and wood without using nails or glue and call it "Shebeke". Shebeke masters are always happy to share their shebeke-window secrets with you. For this you need only come to Sheki.

Who knows, maybe if you're lucky enough and learning fast you can build your own Shebeke window and bring it home as a great memory of your trip! 😎

St. Johanniskirche ⛪

St. John's Church is the first church in Azerbaijan built by Germans. It was built in 1857 and was used as a Lutheran church until the invasion of Bolsheviks. At different times, it was used as a military hospital and a sports school. Since 2005, it has been functioning as a Museum of History and Ethnography of the region. The church was renovated in 2008.
Now walking in the town of Goygol, past Helenendorf, you can admire unique architecture and still feel the presence of German culture. 🤩

Dolma is so delicious that even UNESCO couldn't stand it and included it into the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. 😋
And there are some interesting facts about dolma:
• The name of the main dish of Azerbaijan’s national cuisine, "dolma", derives from the Turkic word “doldurma”, which means “to fill/stuff”.
• There are different types of dolmas in Azerbaijan: with wein leaves, tomatoes, egglants, even onions and potatos!
• The secret of the recipe of delicious dolma is mixed minced meat. While making dolma, just try to mix minced lamb and beef, this dolma will taste amazing!

We are sure all of you know Alfred Nobel and his family. But few people know that the brothers came to Baku and lived here for about 40 years. In fact, they did not come to Azerbaijan for oil...

Robert, one of the brothers who owned an arms factory in St. Petersburg, came here to buy Ironwood for rifles, and discovered that oil in Baku is dirt cheap!😱 And, of course, he did not miss this opportunity. He bought a plot and went in search of oil. This is how the Baku chapter of the life of the Nobels begins☝🏻

The house where they lived before the February Revolution is today a museum where you can see interesting information about the life of the Nobel brothers and Baku in the 19th century🏫
