What is "counter rotation"?

If you have dual-mounted engines (Twins) and the propeller blades are turning clock wise (right), your boat is going to have a tendency to move in that direction as well. That problem is solved with counter-rotating props, one turning counter clock wise (left) and the other turning clock wise (right). This feature provides straighter steering, more level trim, balanced thrust and zero torque thrust. In other words, it keeps you going straight where you want to go. It's a feature found on the DF140A, DF150, DF175, DF200, DF225, DF250, and 300hp models. Suzuki has advanced this design by integrating both Standard and Counter-Rotation into a single unit - Suzuki Selective Rotation. By strengthening the lower unit's forward and reverse gearing, Suzuki engineers have designed a lower unit for the DF300AP and DF250AP that will run in either right or left rotation. This system has many benefits to the Boat Builder, Dealer and Retail Consumer. Suzuki Selective Rotation eliminates the need to purchase a dedicated "Counter-Rotation" outboard by using a special switch that when connected to a circuit inside the engine compartment, turns a regular/standard-rotation outboard into a counter-rotation model. Boat Builders and Dealers do not need to stock standard and counter-rotation models, thus reducing inventory and flooring costs. When repowering, Retail Customers can have their counter-rotation model reprogrammed to standard-rotation for sale on the second hand market. This can help reduce the cost of repowering.

Lean Burn is a patented Suzuki technology which aims to optimize and reduce both fuel consumption and costs.

“It’s a very advanced technology – Suzuki Technical Staff Coordinator Marco Massola explained us during encounter at NauticStore, a Suzuki dealership based in Genola, Italy – which delivers, under specific conditions, a better air/fuel ratio and greater fuel savings”.

As we know, fuel combustion needs a specific amount of air. This air/fuel ratio, called stoichiometric ratio, is equal to 14.7:1, which means 14.7 parts of oxygen to every single part of fuel. Lean Burn system control changes this ratio to the benefit of lower consumption.

The process is controlled by a central electronic unit.

When the engine works under stable conditions, which means a cruising situation with no accelerations or decelerations, the control unit changes the stoichiometric fuel air ratio from 14.7:1 to 17:1, making the air/fuel mixture leaner and increasing the parts of oxygen.

The greater amount of air would compromise real engine performances. However, the control unit monitors all engine parameters and doesn’t change engine performances under stable conditions.


Meanwhile, the greater supply of air significantly reduces fuel consumption.

On Suzuki outboards (Suzuki applies Lean Burn technology on most of its range, from 9.9 to 300 HP) fuel saving can be estimated at about 14% under cruising conditions.

Of course, Lean Burn doesn’t get active at the top of the rev range, when we want to experience the best of engine performances, and at the minimum speed. In all intermediate stages, unless we change the gas throttle position, Lean Burn is active.

Suzuki has been extending the use of this technology over its whole range for some years.

However, it can be applied on old-generation Suzuki engines. Learn Burn management is, in fact, entirely carried out by the central unit and only modern devices have a computing capacity sufficient to support the complex work of Lean Burn.

Selective rotation is a feature to select regular or counter-rotation on one
outboard with an optional connector, thus either regular or counter mode can
be selected on the same outboard.

Maintenance-free timing chains in our range of DF40A and above (Mid range and High Performance engines) means no belt adjustment and no maintenance during the life of the engine.

Timing chains are the devices that make the connection between the crankshaft and camshafts and are located below the power head on a Suzuki outboard.

The self-tensioning, oil-bathed timing chains found exclusively in Suzuki’s 4-stroke outboards reduce noise and improve durability for dependable and quiet operation. The hydraulic chain tensioner automatically adjusts the chain as required, meaning there is zero maintenance required on the chain, EVER!

The DF350A/325A are equipped with a dual louver at the air intake to remove water the air taken into cowl. The Dual louver remove water from the air.

Incorporating a direct intake system, Suzuki Dual louver system contributes to higher engine output.
