A Watch Lover’s Journey:

There is something everyone is passionate about; that one hobby or activity which never fails to deliver joy and happiness to you, even during a gloomy day or trying times. This special hobby can be anything from cooking to watching movies, and for me, that is collecting watches.

I have been a watch aficionado since 2014 and have been actively collecting them ever since. I was inspired by my accounting teacher back then who used to wear his classy watches every day in class and it created a spark in me to do the same. Since then, I started my watch collection journey, and the very first piece in my collection was one from Fastrack gifted by my parents on my seventeenth birthday.

It is often said that “watches are a man’s best jewellery”. I totally agree with this statement but to me, a watch is more than just a piece of accoutrement. I believe a stylish piece of watch has the capability to elevate and speak for a person’s personality. It is the true definition of elegance and creates an impressive and long-lasting impression while building confidence.

Not only that, but a good watch is also a great conversation starter. I love everything about watches; the way the hands move, the mechanism, the history, horology, and production. I have this deep fascination towards collecting and wearing watches that goes beyond looking good. It defines who I am and is embedded into my persona and temperament.

However, not many people can relate to this. Throughout my journey, I have been the victim to several forms of discrimination and prejudice. Often times I have been termed as a “show-off” and “attention-seeker” only for enthusiastically posting pictures of classy watches and partaking in associated conversations.

This is what led to the creation of my Facebook group, “The Watch Keeper’s Arena” in August, 2017. This group comprises of all watch fanatics out there who can truly relate to my thirst for accumulating watches out of pure passion, and not for the purpose of showing off. This group is like a social home for those watch lovers who have faced similar discrimination but are in search of people like them, with whom they can share pictures from their collection and talk about watches setting aside the worry of receiving negative remarks.

My fascination towards watches drove me to motivate many others to pursue this passion, including members of my friend circle and family. To all the watch lovers out there, I would like to convey the message that do not care if you are being judged for “wasting” money, do what makes you feel good and the ones who understand will appreciate. Also, focus on quality rather than quantity; something I came to realize after several years.

Furthermore, it does not matter what brand of watch you own as long as it is original. I always favour a watchmaker’s brand rather than a fashion brand such as Swatch and Seiko, in order to support their zeal for designing and making watches. My favourite brands are Rolex, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Omega, Greubel Forsey GMT, and Tag Heuer. Currently, I own 25 exquisite pieces from which, one from Tag Heuer stands to be my favourite.
