The pursuit of pleasure and happiness will often leave us empty handed in the end.

Fear of the Lord and obedience to His commands are what makes life most fulfilling, after all, it is the full duty of man.

[7] The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. [8] Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, [9] for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.

And As Always...

The legitimacy of Christianity doesn't rest on wishful thinking or fleeting feelings of euphoria, but on the strength of who God is and what He has done.

Progressive Christianity would do well to consider this line of thinking.

So the tomb is in fact empty then huh?

"Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship with Jesus".

As someone who used to think this way when I was a new Christian, it really is a ridiculous statement in hindsight. Here are 2 things I considered when dropping the phrase above:

1. The Bible speaks positively about religion. James tells us how to have 'true religion'.

In James 1: "If any one thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this man's religion is vain. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world."

Clearly, James would not encourage us how to have 'true religion', apart from Christ. Therefore true religion is WITH the God of the Bible.

2. The English word “religion” comes from the Latin term religio. At its root, this term means an “obligation” or “bond.” Our religion, then, is our bond to the Lord; we are bound to Him in faith, hope, and love, which implies certain obligations. We can’t choose between religion and relationship as the OP assumes. Our relationship is expressed through our religion, our bond with the Lord.

This meaning of the word “religion” also helps us understand those who claim to be “spiritual but not religious.” Those who make such a statement typically want the consolations of religion without its obligations and commitments. (Not accusing just making an distinction)

Christianity is a religion. It just happens to be the 1 true religion, and the purest expression of what God wants for his people.
