She had learned, in her life, that time lived inside you. You are time, you breathe time. When she'd been young, she'd had an insatiable hunger for more of it, though she hadn't understood why. Now she held inside her a cacophony of times and lately it drowned out the world. The apple tree was still nice to lie near. They peony, for its scent, also fine. When she walked through the woods she picked her way along the path, making way for the boy inside to run along before her. It could be hard to choose the time outside over the time within.

Every spring, the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken are open to the public for 3 weeks. It is an excellent opportunity to see the wonderful architecture of Alphonse Balat, the mentor of Victor Horta, and the many plants in the greenhouses.

The first part of the Royal Greenhouses was built in the 19th century when King Willem I ordered the built of the Orangery next to his palace.

Later on King Leopold II wanted to extent this Orangery and together with the architect Balat he designed the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken. They built a complex of seven greenhouses in total that took 31 years to complete.

The greenhouses are world famous not just because of their stunning Art Nouveau architecture but also because of their enormous collection of exotic and rare plants from all over the world.

with my gentle loving hand,
teasing, ever pleasing
so that now I understand

how beautiful the flower
that yields without duress,
