Interview: Annie Yang 21/10/2023

Annie Yang is a painter who expresses the idea of the unconditional love through imagery of plants (in particular, the fiddle tree).

"No, we are made from the image of God, so I think people also can give unconditional love. However, yes, the love that people give and receive can be selfish."

"I mostly prefer gestural paintings, not pop art. I say I am influenced by pop art because of the fact that I don't like them. I do agree that they are historically important, but I think historical importance in art is just like seeing art in a social or political context. My works may look like 'cartoons' or 'pop art', but they are not those things. The paintings are only looking like those two in terms of the appearance, which I borrow for my painting. Beneath the surface is witnessing, discovering and observing."

Interview with Sangho Han ()

"The main reason why I attach myself to the history of abstraction and the term "abstraction" is because I was heavily influenced by abstraction. The boundary between non objective and abstraction is insignificant, and to be honest I believe that it would be difficult to explain this. However, if we think of the impact that the term "abstraction" and the history of abstraction made to people, I think that this would be the basis of spirituality. I believe that As we talked last time, I believe that the protruding thoughts and actions of the type of artist who breaks 'taboos' and violates religious precepts (as we talked about last time) comprise the 'abstract parts.' This is in complete opposition to the current of common sense and popular belief and makes the boundary between common sense and the lack of common sense in vain. "

Interview wirth Jun Yang ()

"A keyword for me is humility. I constantly ask myself, what’s the purpose of creating? Making art to impress people or to seek validation is an act out of ego, and when I fall into that mindset, it causes stress. I think it’s important to realize that sometimes art does not need to look a certain way; if I follow my intuition and paint with what my heart tells me, that releases the stress, and I can get a sincere documentation of my mood at the moment."

Noel Park is a South Korean artist who depicts flowers in abstract and representational modes and aspires to become a 'people's painter.'

"However, the scary thing about an artist's words is that if the artist argues that "this is that!" then there is the danger that all the other possibilities are removed, even if the intention while making the work is not there. If making an artwork deep into the night is for having a good time with other people, then speaking minimally gives the best chance for unlimited interpretations and delightful feelings of other people to manifest. Other people's feelings and various thoughts are more important and interesting than my own thoughts."

Interview: Joan Reutershan 24/07/2022

Joan Reutershan makes abstract collage and mixed media paintings about the streets of Brooklyn and is an activist who fights gentrification.

"Graffiti is one ever evolving language of the streets I traverse every day. It captures my attention and I enjoy it without reserve. I appropriate it often. Its energy feels like a reliable antidote to encroaching control and commercialization. The tradition of graffiti art is an inspiration for me from Basquiat to JR to the unknowns of street art today. Graffiti is one sign system among others, like urban design and pragmatic street/construction signage. My work often combines these various languages."

"My name is Jan Dickey. I am a painter now living in Brooklyn, NY by way of Germany (American military base), Delaware, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Hawaiʻi. I remember painting as a little kid with some big brushes and a bucket of water. I would paint with the water on a big concrete slab that was in my backyard, just paint and paint as the marks I made evaporated off the concrete. Looking back, I think that was pretty formational in terms of my interest in change and ephemerality. I ended up going to an arts high school in Wilmington, Delaware and that’s where I first started to identify as an artist. I started making paintings on canvas at that time, easel paintings, and I’ve never broken that habit."
