FRED&FERRY GALLERY is an artist-dedicated gallery that offers a platform for both young artists to present their work to the public for the first time, as well as for more experienced artists who want to take new steps in their careers.
In the upper gallery, we have hung one of the largest works in the smallest room of the exhibition: ‘𝘊𝘰𝘥𝘢’ by 𝐀𝐫𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧, , creating an interesting interplay with the architectural setting. Opposite, you can then find the oldest painting in the exhibition: ‘𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥’ by 𝐓𝐡é 𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧.
Both are on view until this Saturday.
Saturday 5 October : finissage from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Today we celebrate Jana Coorevits' birthday!
"Jana Coorevits builds poetic spaces, forging paths to alternative modes of communication. Seeking to make room for complex emotions and experiences, she looks for new narratives to define relationships and events. In the pursuit of the exact right nuance to reveal what’s going on within and around the body, she employs unhurried and intimate renditions." Yasmin Van 'tveld
The opening will take place on Saturday, Nov. 25, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m

Saturday (21.09), the moment has finally arrived: the '𝙇𝙚𝙩’𝙨 𝙜𝙤 𝙛𝙡𝙮 𝙖 𝙠𝙞𝙩𝙚' project will take off! After years of dreaming about this unique aerial exhibition, we will, weather permitting and with favorable winds, launch 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐲 𝐤𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐤𝐲.
These kites are currently part of the exhibition 'Anyway the wind blows,' which can still be viewed until September 15th.
Featuring kites made by 𝐙𝐨𝐫𝐨 𝐅𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐥, 𝐋𝐢𝐞𝐬𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐡 𝐇𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐱, 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚 and 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬, among others. Initiative of 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬!
Don’t miss the chance to visit the exhibition first, and be sure to come and watch as the kites take flight. The kite launch is part of the 'The Sound of C' festival. Bring your own kite and join in the fun. There are even prizes to be won!
For more information and tickets, visit the website.

𝐋𝐞𝐲𝐥𝐚 𝐀𝐲𝐝𝐨𝐬𝐥𝐮 had a solo exhibition at the gallery earlier this year: 𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙚 𝙈ü𝙡𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝘽𝙖𝙡𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙮. She places figures in space such that you can't ignore them. The sturdy sculptures transform tension and structure into a sense of confusion about their material and coherence. Her arrangements are stage sets to roam around in.
A work we didn't show then, we can now give a place. A work to roam around in and bend over to move to the next space.
𝐓𝐡é 𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧 gave a nice modest visual response with the works 𝙙𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙖𝙣.

Interested in taking a private tour through the exhibition 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙣? On Saturday 28 September at 11 am, 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐤 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐞𝐫𝐭 and 𝐓𝐡é 𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧 will guide a limited group of happy people around. This tour is free, but you must register at [email protected].
The work 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐞 𝐃𝐞 𝐕𝐨𝐞𝐭 brought into the exhibition is one of his personal favourites. A work he had only been able to show a few years ago during his solo at Barbé (and at a short weekend exhibition in Scheldewindeke). It is a work that he can link to 𝐓𝐡é 𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧's work; he recalled that they once visited his studio with the class and one of the things that stayed with him were a number of works on which there were such typical, simplified, ‘stepping’ figures that throughout the works (‘his studio was really bulging!’) a kind of ‘repetitive cadence’. And he also recalls a rather muted colour palette.
In response to Charlie, Thé brought out a work from 1986. It has become a nice interplay of form between the two works. Perhaps the cadence Charlie remembered, but from a formal point of view.

As a prelude to the exhibition wandelgangen, we are happy to share a video of the action ‘Op de bonnefooi ’ by Vaast Colson. This action, not originally intended for the public, is considered by the artist to be a painterly intervention in response to ‘de jongleur’, a 2001 painting by Thé van Bergen. Vaast recalled this particular work, which he had seen at Thé's exhibition at the M HKA some 20 years ago, and which he himself had later selected for the 2022 Biennale of Painting.
We enjoyed this action too much to withhold from you.
This Saturday is the vernissage! Be sure to come and see how the work of the 12 invited artists corresponds with the work of Thé van Bergen! And, that day you can also experience All eyes on/off me, a cutpiece by V.C.! A new action from Colson. With souvenirs.
Leyla Aydoslu, Arne Bastien, Michiel Ceulers, Vaast Colson, Charlie De Voet, Tina Gillen, Vedran Kopljar, Bart Lodewijks, Tom Poelmans, Glenn Sanders, Sarah Smolders, Lisa Vlaemminck.
The opening will take place on Saturday, September 7, from 2pm to 7pm.
The exhibition can then be visited until Saturday, October 5, each Friday and Saturday from 1pm to 6pm and 7/7 by appointment.
Welcome!
Fred & Ferry

Glenn Sanders has responded to our request to participate in the ‘Wandelgangen’ exhibition with an email in which he remembers Thé van Bergen with fond memories:
'One of the questions Thé often asked, which I still carry with me to this day goes something like this:
'If you already know what a painting is going to look like, why are you still going to make it? '
In this work, the prints from the rolling process are small and repetitive, just as Thé uses different motifs in his work, these prints are the motif for me in this painting.'

"Any resemblance to actual artworks is purely coincidental" is a disclaimer that might be totally irrelevant for the ‘𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧’ exhibition. Rather, it is about the playful lines one might draw across generations.
So is it mere coincidence that 𝐓𝐡é 𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧 chose his painting ‘de eilanden’ in response to 𝐋𝐢𝐬𝐚 𝐕𝐥𝐚𝐞𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐤's proposal ‘Collective longing for palm trees, cutlets and toma-toes’?
Perhaps not. But it is only when you will see both paintings in reel that you will be able to define your own interpretation!

This work by 𝐓𝐡é 𝐯𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧, 'de ogen, 2020 + ‘21', will 𝑛𝑜𝑡 be on display in the “𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧” exhibition.
However, this work was the inspiration for artist 𝐌𝐢𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐥 𝐂𝐞𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐬 to submit his work, Ritratto della madre fatale dell'artista / Ich heiße Superfantastisch! Ich trinke Schampussy mit Lachsfisch!, 2023, to be presented. Michiel saw a nice connection.
Yet, as is to most artists' reputation, Thé did not follow his proposal, but contributed another work in response.

𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐡 𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 made an impressive intervention in 2019 in the gallery space of mariondecannière, the space where nowadays FRED&FERRY continues to invite artists. So the collaboration with Sarah already has a long history and, in response to our request to participate in ‘𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧’, she proposed to revisit a part of this installation. But as you will expect, Sarah is not going to make a copy of what she realised at the time, there are going to be very subtle (to major) differences. It is up to you to come and discover them!
