A special event will take place this Sunday! Raku Terai, renowned wood artist and husband to Mika Horie, is also a tea master with a passion for sharing his expertise. On Sunday, 17th November, you have the unique opportunity to experience a matcha tea ceremony performed by Terai himself. However, to maintain the intimacy and authenticity of the event, we can only accommodate 5 people. The event will take place at 13:15. If you wish to be part of this special occasion, we invite you to participate at a cost of 10 Euros per person. To secure your place, please express your interest by sending us a DM indicating with how many people you would like to come.
IBASHO has invited the Belgian ceramist Geert Van der Borght to exhibit his art works during the exhibition ‘Visual Poetry from Ishikawa’ since his work shares a wabi-sabi sensibility with Horie’s and Izu’s art. Van der Borght has been working in the field of ceramics for over 40 years.
Van der Borght will be present during the vernissage on Saturday 16 November from 2-6 pm.

IBASHO is excited to share a preview of our Paris Photo presentation. This year the fair will be back in the renewed Grand Palais. It’s the yearly must-see event for the international photography community.
For this year’s edition of Paris Photo IBASHO is getting up-close and personal with a thematic exploration centered on ‘Skin’. Our booth blends contemporary and classic elements within the realm of Japanese n**e photography.
Contemporary photography (in order of the images):
Takako Kido delves into the ancient Japanese principal of ‘skinship’ in which skin-to-skin, heart-to-heart contact between a child, its mother and other close relatives sit centrally in its healthy development.
Sayuri Ichida has resorted to her own body as a photographic subject during the pandemic lockdowns, and Tokyo Rumando also performs with her body for her camera in various guises.
Naoyuki Ogino transforms the human body into abstract bodyscapes, delving into the tactile essence of the skin, while Miho Kajioka will craft poetic compositions using the naked form, specifically for Paris Photo.
Tomorrow we will share our selection of Classic Photography that we will bring to Paris Photo.

RIP Eikoh Hosoe (1933 - 2024)
Eikoh Hosoe was one of the most influential postwar Japanese photographers and our favourite photographer. His death on 16 September has been a shock to us and we wanted to pay tribute to him.
The Guardian published an article about Hosoe in 2022 that honours the artist and his work. Some quotes from this article:
“Hosoe was ahead of his time in his embrace of the avant garde and his creation of an often darkly poetic visual expressionism through his use of high-contrast black-and-white tones, sculptural closeups of n**e bodies and starkly evocative landscapes that seem to reflect his – and his subject’s – interlocking states of mind.”
He was professionally and personally affiliated with the writer Yukio Mishima and experimental artists of the 1960s such as the dancer Tatsumi Hijikata, though his work extends to a diversity of subjects. His photography is not only notable for its artistic influence but for its wider contribution to the reputations of his subjects.
The boldness of his approach pushed against the parameters of documentary photography, echoing through the work of the Provoke generation of the late 1960s, one of whose leading practitioners, Daidō Moriyama, actually worked as Hosoe’s assistant when he first arrived in Tokyo in 1961. Add to this Hosoe’s co-founding of the Vivo collective in 1959, it’s name taken from the Esperanto word for “life”, and his pioneering photo books, made in collaboration with the best designers of the time, and it is hard not to see him as the most influential postwar Japanese photographer.”

This Saturday 28 September we will be launching the first artist book by Naohiro Ninomiya, “Glanage,” presented as a beautifully crafted art object. This limited edition double leporello book, hand bound in a cloth cover, offers a small-scale view of Ninomiya’s series, thoughtfully designed and co-published by IBASHO & the(M) éditions.
In Ninomiya’s own words, “Glanage” is inspired by his childhood habit of gathering small treasures, now translated into capturing everyday scenes and objects through his lens. This intuitive process, reminiscent of the French concept of gleaning, transforms the unnoticed into delicate, timeless images. Each photograph, crafted with the orotone technique, becomes a visual gem, celebrating the fleeting beauty of ordinary moments.
Ninomiya will be at IBASHO from 2 - 6 pm for a book signing, this Saturday 28 September.
