Callewaert Vanlangendonck Gallery
The gallery focuses on the artists’ groups ‘Art Abstrait’, ‘Art Construit’, ‘Formes’, ‘G 58’ and the ‘Nieuwe Vlaamse School’.
The Callewaert-Vanlangendonck Gallery is, thanks to its targeted choice of post-1945 Belgian abstract artists, a welcome presence amongst the galleries specialising in high-quality modern artworks. The gallery’s owners, Yoeri Vanlangendonck and Brecht Callewaert, have both lost their hearts to the post-war avant-garde. In their opinion, the Belgian abstract artists are still undervalued, both with

Mark Verstockt (1930-2014) played an essential role in the Belgian post-war art scene. Starting from the fifties, his work fits in with the European New Tendencies and the ZERO movement, which became evident through Verstockt’s inclusion in the exposition ‘Monochrome Malerei’ in Leverkusen, the first big ZERO manifestation in 1960. During the mid-sixties, Verstockt attained a geometrical visual language which was a permanent motif in his work from that point onwards. He became a respected defender of Minimal Art, with a preference for the square.

We are extremely proud to announce that from now on, the artist Maurice Wyckaert will be represented exclusively by Callewaert Vanlangendonck Gallery. Wyckaert was a major figure in the Belgian abstract expressionist movement. We thank the family for their trust.
Maurice Wyckaert (1923-1996) was a neo-expressionist, lyric abstract painter, draftsman and graphic artist. He received training at the Academy of Brussels (1940-1947 and 1949-1950) and at Saint-Josse-ten-Noode and the Free Ateliers of Saint-Lambrechts-Woluwe. He made his debut with beautiful expressionist still lifes, indebted to Jean Brusselmans. Later, Wyckaert became influenced by William Turner and James Ensor and their ideas of luminism.

Our Story
Callewaert Vanlangendonck Gallery, founded in 2012 in Antwerp, Belgium, displays lyrical and geometrically abstract artists from the following groups: Cobra, Art Abstrait, Art Construit, Formes, G58, the New Flemish School and the ZERO movement and contemporary artists in line with this visual language. The gallery works together with the artists, their heirs or artist estates and also publishes art books on its represented artists.
Gallery owners Yoeri Vanlangendonck and Brecht Callewaert emphasize the importance and the contemporary character of the Belgian artists of the 1950s and 1960s. By engaging them in a dialogue with current abstract artists, an interaction between present and past arises. It shows how timeless, universal and cross-border this avant-garde art still is. The gallery has two spaces: one at both corners of the Wolstraat-Coppenolstraat crossing and the main space in Sint-Jacobstraat, next to St. James’ Church (university quarter). In addition Callewaert Vanlangendonck is an exhibitor at Art Brussels, one of the most renowned contemporary art fairs in Europe and a must-see in the international art calendar. As a partner of Delen Private Bank, the gallery organizes exhibitions at the bank’s headquarters and lends artworks for fairs such as BRAFA and Interieur Kortrijk, of which Delen Private Bank is the main sponsor.
Artist Estates
In addition to organizing retrospectives and group exhibitions, Callewaert Vanlangendonck Gallery manages the artist estate of Guy Vandenbranden (1926-2014). On June 3, 2014, Vandenbranden died in Antwerp and bequeathed his archives to Callewaert Vanlangendonck. The gallery then founded the ‘Estate Guy Vandenbranden’, which manages the artist’s oeuvre and promotes it at home and abroad.
