Troubleyn/Jan Fabre
Troubleyn/Jan Fabre is the theatre company of the Belgian artist Jan Fabre.
IN THE PRESS | A beautiful and insightful article featured in the prestigious Italian newspaper la Repubblica's theatrical newsletter "Post Teatro," written by the renowned Anna Bandettini! This piece celebrates the ongoing 'FESTIVAL FABRE 2024 - L'Amore e la Bellezza sono i Poteri Supremi' at Teatro OUT OFF, .
“In the theatre, as in society, the battle for universal inclusion, in terms of gender, risk excluding the woman, the actress and the actress's body, whose specific identity has been an important element in the evolution of the performing arts. Precisely from this point of view, the festival ‘Love and Beauty, Supreme Power’ taking place at the Out Off theatre in Milan was and is very interesting… In addition to the performances - and each one is a small masterpiece - the Milanese festival proposed Fabre's creativity as a whole, from the creative process (see the stages on the actor's work) to drawings, sculptures and installations, as in the beautiful exhibition 'Stella' at the Galleria Gaburro, curated by Melania Rossi...At the center of it all ‘love and beauty’, which for Fabre are expressed in the work of his actresses and in the body of the woman on stage, who in his theatre becomes a sign of cultural and human resistance....
This is why I wanted to give space here to the words of the Belgian artist's actresses and collaborators, who are not only the heart of this festival, but the centre of his theatrical work. And they are Irene Urciuoli, Stella Höttler, Els Deceukelier Ivana Jozić, Miet Martens, Alma Auer.” - Anna Bandettini

TOMORROW 24.09 | Following the “avant-garde, unrestrained and artistically rounded”* premiere in Croatia, we eagerly await the Italian premiere of ‘I BELIEVE IN THE LEGEND OF LOVE’ with the incredible Ivana Jozic, presented by Teatro OUT OFF, . Part of the FESTIVAL FABRE 2024 - L’AMORE E LA BELLEZZA SONO I POTERI SUPREMI.
IN THE PRESS - A glowing review of the recent performances: “He is being enticed by the 'sweet allure of life,' which Jozić, irresistibly attractive, unusually beautiful, and achingly adaptable, so magically translates into space. The fluid motion breaks into brief, fragmented moments that evoke an inner struggle, while a white veil of (in)decision drapes over the bright canvas of her face, which, with childlike ease, transforms into anyone or anything. To the sound of powerful music, gradually evolving from the patter of raindrops to tribal rhythms, and to the countdown of what could be the last moments of life, Jozić returns again and again to a letter consumed not just by the dilemma of life and death, but also by love. Love, which emerges as the ultimate (and most important) theme of this performance, will be remembered by many as avant-garde, sincere, free from pretension and false moralizing, yet deeply emotional and, above all, artistically magical.” - Magdalena Mrčela | DalmacijaDanas*

TONIGHT 22.09 | Following a standing ovation at its world premiere during FESTIVAL FABRE 2024 – L’AMORE E LA BELLEZZA SONO I POTERI SUPREMI at Teatro OUT OFF , a special performance of IO SONO UN ERRORE | I AM A MISTAKE, featuring Irene Urciuoli, will take place at the Visconti Theater, a historical and architectural gem in Grazzano Visconti.
Thank you to ChezActors for making it possible!
The blunt confession ‘I am a mistake’ is like a mantra that repeats and divides; the voice in this text weaves a web of confessions and meanings, sometimes as a metaphor of an artist sometimes in a protesting tone. It comes as no surprise that this piece is dedicated to the subversive filmmaker (and amateur entomologist) Luis Buñuel and to Antonin Artaud.
IN THE PRESS: “...the presence of Irene Urciuoli, an Italian performer who has been in Fabre's company for six years, emerges: delicate and concrete, she is striking for her precision and ductility, her physical and evocative strength in the fight for the power of beauty.” - Anna Bandettini / la Repubblica (Review of Irene Urciuoli, performing in Simona, the gangster of art)

'I am a mistake' is a theatre text written by Jan Fabre in 1988. It is a manifest that amounts almost to a profession of faith by the artist. The blunt confession 'I am a mistake' is like a mantra that repeats and divides...
IN THE PRESS (On Irene Urciuoli's performances earlier in the week with 'Simona, The gangster of art!'): “Jan Fabre, a genius and multiform artist, has returned to Milan, thanks to the important festival dedicated to him by the Out Off Theatre, with his performance theatre to the limit, provocative, anarchic but resting on an iron discipline… Simona, the gangster of art, is performed by the talented Irene Urciuoli, who lives in a white room of co***ne, obsessively taken while eating pieces of Munch's painting ‘The Scream’. Eating art, beauty, to possess it?” - Magda Poli | Corriere della Sera

THANK YOU! Last night, we had the honour of premiering I BELIEVE IN THE LEGEND OF LOVE at the stunning Hvar Summer Festival, . The overwhelming response, with enthusiastic, sustained applause and the warm reception from the Croatian audience, has left us truly moved. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for this special evening.
Tonight, Ivana Jozic will take the stage once again for the second performance. Meanwhile, in an inspiring interview with Magdalena Mrčela for DalmacijaDanas, Ivana reflects on her experience creating this new work, sharing insights into her career and life:
“This play is not meant to shock, but to evoke, to inspire thought. It’s a deeply personal, poetic story about love, life, and its end. Unlike many of Fabre's other works, this one is different—he, as an exceptional artist and director, serves me as a performer. His curiosity, as innocent as a child at play, along with his openness and purity, creates performances with lightning speed that captivate the audience…” – Ivana Jozic.

In our second tribute to this soon-to-be-married creative couple, we had the pleasure of sitting down with our exceptional resident composer, Alma Auer.
She shared her inspiring creative journey, beginning with her first score for Troubleyn/Jan Fabre’s production ‘Elle était et Elle est, Même’ (2021). Since then, Alma has crafted mesmerizing soundscapes for ‘Simona, Gangster of Art’ (2023) and the entire 8-hour performance of ‘PEAK MYTIKAS (On the top of Mount Olympus)’, while also performing onstage. She’s now hard at work on the upcoming productions ‘I Believe in the Legend of Love’, ‘I Am a Mistake’ and ‘I’m Sorry’.
Like our technical director and lighting designer, Wout Janssens, Alma’s artistry has been recognized internationally:
“Composed by Alma Auer, the music acted as the twelfth performer, continuously engaging you with transportive and, at times, hypnotic sounds blending traditional, classical, and contemporary instruments.” – Elena Martinique | Widewalls
“I leave this strange, macabre and noisy party… in my ears, the extraordinary music of Alma Auer, which the artist herself performs.” – Elena Contenta Patacchini, cheFare
CONGRATULATIONS to Wout & Alma, an extraordinary and dynamic couple! Join us in saying a huge ‘THANK YOU’ for their incredible contributions and for all the adventures that lie ahead.
Watch Alma’s full interview on our YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/drde1qSs7s0
Video: Mario Leko | Music: 'Elle etait et elle est, meme' by Alma Auer.
This week, we’re celebrating two remarkable creatives who work tirelessly to bring the magic of Troubleyn/Jan Fabre’s performances to life. As they embark on a brand-new adventure together—marriage—we want to say a heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS!
Today, we’re turning the spotlight on our brilliant technical director and lighting designer, Wout Janssens. Wout first joined the Troubleyn/Jan Fabre team for ‘Mount Olympus. To glorify the cult of tragedy, a 24-hour performance’ in 2015. Since then, he’s been the unseen force behind the scenes, illuminating our stages and making our performers shine with his kindness and dedication. His work has been praised in international reviews, with la Repubblica noting, “The lighting design by Wout Janssens is vital in the incredible rise, at the 'premiere' of the full moon that emerged from veils of clouds as light as the fumes rising from the stage, affirming the redeemed hope and divinity in the trembling smile of the protagonist, Cassandra.”
Join us in raising a glass to Wout & Alma!
