Should we tell people they are in the talent pool?
We think you shouldn't. Here's why:
Talent is about facts.
Not words.
When you tell someone that they're part of a talent pool, they might be happy or proud for a bit.
But then what?
If nothing concrete happens for them, it's worth nothing.
Make it meaningful or don't talk about it.
- give them a promotion
- offer some internal mobility
- engage them in a new project
If you can't, that's ok. But no need to share the information with them.
Keep it internal to the talent management team.
And when you can, make it concrete.
Agree? Disagree?
Controversial fact: your people are not your major asset.
You read that right.
If it's not people, then what is it?
→ their competencies
This is an intentionally provocative statement.
We don't believe people aren't important.
But we do believe that their competencies are crucial to your company's performance.
Especially today.
The lifespan of a competence has never been shorter.
Just think about artificial intelligence. ChatGPT made a bunch of competencies obsolete in weeks.
Managing competencies has become mandatory.
The best part?
Developing your people's competencies not only benefits you as their employer. It also significantly grows their personal value!
