TREASURE AND SACRIFICE

Chess is a strategic game of precision and calculation, of order and surprise. It highlights power structures and the manifestation of their capacities. It invites us to manage the totality of pieces in the manner of a demigod or a parka that invisibly directs the movement of the threads of destiny.
Each figure has its starting position, its style of movement, and its value. Some characters can sacrifice themselves so that others may survive. And those who survive can remain immobile until the end of the game. The protected are not the defenseless, but rather the highest echelons of power. It is the story of a combat in which the first line is clearly dispensable. Or the story of the courtly way through which we can ascend to the highest strata of society. An analogy of a feudal life that somehow still resonates in our days.
An example of its resonance is the social structure of visual art. Can its roles be analogous to chess pieces? In the end, how is it that some artists manage to reach the highest layers of production and recognition, while others, however talented, seem to have been dispensable for the History of Humanity? Who decides which voice of culture is sacrificed and which one remains protected in the museum context for its historical survival? Who decides the poetic discourse of an era?
Carlos Caliban Ramirez, with his new work "ECHECS TROPICAUX: UNE IMMERSION LUDIQUE ENTRE STRATEGIE ET EXOTISME", seeks to provoke us in this respect. Copies of linoleums illustrating the chess pieces have been installed everywhere, both inside and outside the exhibition space. Those that have been glued on urban walls are, contrary to what one might think, as appreciable as those framed and presented on the white wall of the cultural center, protected and sheltered from the erosion of air and water, cold and sun. Who decides this difference here and what does it imply to make this difference? Some will answer that, in this case, it is certainly the artist. But such a decision has not been easy. We must not forget that their exhibition in the public space implies a transgression and with it the clear destiny that they will be removed, while those exhibited here may even be for sale to those who want to treasure them. Ramirez has had to face the binomial: treasure and sacrifice in his own work.
"Who is an artist and who is allowed to be an artist?" is the basic question here. If the recognition of the artist is simply due to the product of chance, of an invisible hand whose intersubjective intelligence is to this day indecipherable, or else an agreement of the highest layers of the market, criticism and historiography that play at spinning the narrative of a century. Meanwhile, the peon only knows how to be a peon, and in a way that is as bohemian as it is stoic, he has had to deal with the inclemencies of destiny
