This week we had the pleasure of hosting American election expert Dr. Christina Barsky from the University of Vermont in collaboration with the Belgian Leadership Project. Dr. Barsky delivered an insightful lecture on the upcoming U.S. elections and the American electoral system. Ambassador Adler and Mrs. Adler had the honor last night of hosting these accomplished students and researchers and learning more about their incredible work.

They were also honored to welcome one of the most famous Belgian Fulbright alumni – Prime Minister Alexander De Croo – who addressed the guests to highlight the enormous impact of his own Fulbright experience in the United States.

These outstanding grantees embody the best of both our countries and demonstrate the importance of maintaining the strong tradition of partnership between our two countries.

🌍🤝 Ambassador Adler had a great meeting with ENGIE Belgium CEO Vincent Verbeke today. They discussed Engie Belgium’s ambitious new strategy which will triple renewable energy capacity.

“Our partnership is strong and rooted in shared values. Working together, we can continue to make a difference to increase prosperity and security for all our citizens. I’m excited to see what we will achieve over the next few months.” Last night Ambassador Adler hosted our Rentrée reception with diplomatic colleagues, program partners, and friends. This was a terrific opportunity for our embassy team to continue important conversations about how to productively and collaboratively address challenges our two countries share

Fleron, Tournai, Tienen, Ostend, Vilvoorde, Orp-Gauche, and other towns across the country recently hosted commemorations to honor and remember those who fought and died liberating Belgium from N**i occupation 80 years ago. Members of the embassy community were honored to join these ceremonies and to thank all those who work so hard to keep the memory alive.

Kevin Volon is an analyst for the Belgian federal government with extensive experience in counterterrorism and intelligence. He will participate in the “Regional Collaboration in Combating Transnational Crime’ IVLP program, with peers from all over Europe. During his IVLP program, he will visit federal, state and municipal institutions and initiatives on combating transnational crime and its consequences all over the United States. We wish him an enriching IVLP program.

Standing on a hill overlooking a beautiful, peaceful valley, Monceau-Imbrechies remembered that 80 years ago at 11:00 am on September 2, 1944, this serene location marked the spot where the first American soldiers were killed during the liberation of Belgium.

During the morning of September 2, 1944, the first American troops crossed the border from France into Belgium on a small bridge near the town of Cendron and twelve Americans were killed in action in a firefight in a local farm in Monceau-Imbrechies, becoming the first Americans to die on Belgian soil in WWII.

An honor platoon and Color Guard from the U.S. Army Garrison Benelux were present at the ceremony and the Belgian Air Force flew over Cendron to mark this important anniversary.

Ambassador Adler was honored to attend the two ceremonies and to meet with the American family members who came to honor and remember the crew of the B-17 “Susan Ruth” that was shot down in the area.

Mons was the first large city in Belgium to be liberated by American troops in September 1944. 80 years later, Mons organized a series of events to commemorate this powerful moment in history and the heroic actions of the 83rd Reconnaissance Battalion of the 3rd U.S. Armored Division "Spearhead" who liberated the city's population after years of occupation.

As Ambassador Adler said during the special commemoration on the Mons Grand Place: “This year is especially poignant, as we come together to remember many of the most important milestones of the Second World War. Peace is only at risk when individual citizens lose sight of the intrinsic link between freedom and duty. By standing together then, we did not simply persevere, but we emerged victorious and stronger and created a united and enduring Trans-Atlantic friendship.”

Ambassador Adler and Gen. Christopher Cavoli, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander and commander of U.S. European Command were honored to participate in this ceremony to remember the feats of the American troops, the courage of the resistance movement and the men and women who did not return home. , Belgium and the U.S. still share the same values to defend democracy today as they did 80 years ago.

The dozens of vintage tanks and vehicles that made the city center become a living museum of WWII armored vehicles were gathered on the Grand Place.

Ambassador Adler had a great meeting with Elia CEO Catherine Vandenborre. They discussed the visionary Princess Elisabeth Energy Island and its role in boosting European energy security, with exciting updates on Elia's offshore wind, solar projects, and investment in U.S. clean energy. 🌍🤝

On October 17, 1944, Lieutenant Perry Powel, with his co-pilot Sam Walker and their crew, took off in England with the B-17 Betsy Ross bomber. As they returned from their mission, the plane was damaged by N**i anti-aircraft fire. Powel ordered his crew to jump to safety while he and Walker looked for a safe spot for an emergency landing. They succeeded in landing the plane in a clearing between Berlare and Wichelen, ensuring there were no civilian casualties.

On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belgium, the municipality of Wichelen wanted to pay tribute to the pilots and crew members of the Betsy Ross who risked their lives for their freedom and spared the village through a heroic landing. Statues of the two pilots have been unveiled to help honor their valor.

DCM Richardson and Colonel Kreiler were honored to attend the ceremony, together with family members of the crew. Just as we did 80 years ago, the 🇺🇸 and 🇧🇪 still today stand for the same shared values when it comes to defending democracy.
