Organized by CERES' Nasrin Ashrafi and Helge Daniels, with great help from Abdel-Wahab Khalifa and IATIS. Also a challenging exercise for KU Leuven 's interpreting students ;) Brussels, 19-20 October 2023.

Ewoud Goethals and Elke Brems attended the international symposium on diversity in the transnational circulation of Dutch Language Literature in Stockholm (24-26 August 2023), organised by the wonderful Annika Johansson, Małgorzata Dowlaszewicz and Sara Van Meerbergen. Elke presented some closing remarks and Ewoud presented a paper on Kristien Hemmerechts in French translation.

CERES members Laura Cernat and Timothy Sirjacobs completed the IWL Summer School 2023 at Harvard on the 29th of July.

On Monday and Tuesday 26 and 27 June 2023 Carmen Reisinger co-hosted a conference on The international circulation and translation of Shakespeare criticism. It was two great days of inspiring papers and discussions!

Upcoming screening and Q&A with Behrouz Boochani and Arash Kamali Sarvestanion Thursday, 27 April, 4-6:30 pm in the Justus Lipsiuszaal (Blijde Inkomsstraat 21, 3000 Leuven): Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time.

Kurdish-Iranian writer, journalist, and filmmaker Behrouz Boochani and Iranian-Dutch filmmaker Arash Kamali Sarvestani will join us for the screening of their award-winning documentary film Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time (2017). The film was shot on Manus Island, largely from inside the detention centre in which Boochani was detained as an asylum seeker from 2013 until 2019. Like his book No Friend but the Mountains (2018), Chauka is the result of a clandestine collaboration via WhatsApp and provides a rare glimpse into life in indefinite detention in the offshore ‘processing centre’ on Manus Island, which was declared illegal in 2016 and closed one year later.

Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time is at once an eyewitness account of the living conditions inside the Australian offshore detention centre, an uneasily silent mediation on state violence against asylum seekers, and an urgent reflection on human rights and asylum politics.

Behrouz Boochani escaped Manus Island in November 2019 and currently resides in Wellington, New Zealand. He has been appointed adjunct associate professor in the faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of New South Wales and visiting professor at Birkbeck Law School at the University of London. His book No Friend but The Mountains: Writing From Manus Prison won the 2019 Victorian Prize for Literature, and has been published in 18 languages in 23 countries. Freedom, Only Freedom, a collection of his prison writings and journalistic pieces for The Guardian, The Financial Times, The Sydney Morning Herald and other newspapers, appeared at Bloomsbury earlier in 2023.

Arash Kamali Sarvestani is an Iranian-Dutch Filmmaker and video artist. After studying Cinema at the Art University of Teheran, he moved to the Netherlands to study Video Art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam in 2009. His video “Title of Essay: The Sea” was the result of his close collaboration with Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami at a workshop in Barcelona in 2015. In 2016, after two years of investigation about the Australian offshore detention centres on Manus and Nauru, he started collaborating with Behrouz Boochani on Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time.

Coming up soon: On Thursday 23 March at 3pm, Emily Apter (New York University) will deliver the CETRA/CERES Lecture 2023 on “Translating Injustice: The Problem of Speech Unfreedom in Claudia Rankine’s Just Us.”

Emily Apter needs no introduction. She is the author of The Translation Zone: A New Comparative Literature (Princeton UP, 2006) and Against World Literature: On the Politics of Untranslatability (Verso, 2013), and was co-editor of theDictionary of Untranslatables: A Philosophical Lexicon (Princeton UP, 2015). Her new book project is entitledTranslating in-Equality: Equivalence, Justness, Rightness, Equaliberty.

For the literary journal Deus Ex Machina https://www.facebook.com/deus.exmachina.940/ Ernest De Clerck edited a special issue on contemporary Scottish writing, in collaboration with Glasgow-based journal Thi Wurd. He also translated stories by Gillian Roberts, Alan McMunnigall, Mark Blair, and Gill Davies. Tom Toremans translated Ali Smith’s “The Detainee’s Tale”.

New publication: Tom Toremans interviewed writer, journalist and activist Behrouz Boochani on his book No Friend but the Mountains, refugee writing and the political power of literature. The interview has now appeared in Contemporary Literature (vol 62, nr. 4, pp. 451-475).

Call for Papers 2024: Controversy

The Yearbook for Dutch Book History publishes Dutch and English-language articles on the book history of the Low Countries in all time periods. For the 31st edition of the Yearbook, to be published in 2024, we welcome in particular contributions concerning the theme ‘Controversy’.

Scandals, provocations and ethical problems: some are shocked by them, some delight in them, others use them to change the world. Our current society may seem more divided than ever, but is that truly the case? To explore this issue, the editorial board of the Yearbook for Dutch Book History seeks articles on the role of controversy in the book history of the Low Countries. Contributions
might study books that caused controversy in the past, or those that do so in our own age, because of their outdated content or illustrations, or even ethical issues concerning anthropodermic book bindings.

We welcome articles focussing on any of the following subject areas:
● Controversial authors, collectors or publications;
● Ethical issues in the book trade, publishing industry or the materiality of the book;
● Books that shocked society and set in motion broader societal changes;
● The use of satire in text and image;
● The book and pamphlet as means of protest;
● Readers’ reactions to controversial books;
● Disinformation and fake news.
Send your proposal or article summary to the editorial board before 1 March 2023 ([email protected] or via one of our editors). The deadline for contributions to the 2024 edition of the Yearbook is 1 November 2023.
