An Artistic Exploration of Materials and Cultural Symbolism.

José Luis Martinat’s (1974, Lima) artistry is characterized by his adept use of various materials, including film, drawing, photography, writing, and sound. Through his artistic approach of appropriating, manipulating, and distorting pre-existing materials, he breathes new life into them, generating fresh possibilities for associations and interpretations. This process reflects his fascination with images as artificial creations and how reality finds expression through them.

In recent ‘Resolutions and Dissolutions’, Martinat has ventured into intervening with symbolic materials from colonial culture, such as engravings and drawings, adding depth to his exploration of social, political and cultural significance.

Jose Luis Martinat participated in the Sharjah Biennale in 2009 and held significant exhibitions at esteemed institutions like the Telefonica Foundation and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) in Lima during 2013. His works have been showcased at renowned locations like the Malmö Museum in 2008, the Wysing Art Centre in Cambridge in 2007, and the Lima Art Museum (MALI) in 2006 and 2008.

Furthermore, José Luis Martinat has collaborated on compelling projects alongside his brother José Carlos Martinat. Together, they have worked with prominent institutions such as the Peréz Art Museum in Miami (PAMM) in 2018, the MoMA in New York in 2017, and the TATE Modern in London in 2013.

“A first book is an important step in the life of an artist.
Fairs and exhibitions have an ephemeral side and are often the representation of the work of a moment. A book freezes and retraces a period of the artist’s life, in this case the last 5 years for the work of 𝗜𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗗.
It allows us to understand her practice but also to see its evolution”…

𝗖𝗮𝗶𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶 // 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐲

The first European gallery exhibition in Brussels from the Brasilian artist.

𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶 is an artist known for his metal sculptures, which are created using an idiosyncratic weaving technique that draws inspiration from traditional one loop weaving methods. This approach to sculpting with metal wire sets him apart from conventional sculptors, showcasing his innovative and intricate vision.

In his creative process, Marcolini employs intricate gestures to manipulate the wire gradually, allowing the form to emerge little by little. This method emphasizes attention to detail and requires a high level of skill and patience. Through this meticulous process, he achieves sculptures that strike a delicate balance between abstraction and realism, blurring the boundaries between the two artistic styles…

Born in Caracas 1964, Magdalena is one of the most renowned Latin American artists living and working out of Venezuela. Her work, which combines video, installations, sculptures and prints, explores two major themes: nature and a crucial reinterpretation of abstraction. For almost 20 years, Magdalena Fernández has been using digital media to deconstruct the geometric abstraction of 20th-century masters such as Piet Mondrian and Joaquin Torres-Garcia.

With ‘Pintura móvile’, Magdalena Fernández proposes a new videos inspired by parrots, from the serie ‘Ara Ararauna’ previously exhibited in 2009 Venice Biennale, and part of the following collections; Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles and Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, Poland. Ara ararauna is a Latin name of a parrot inhabiting South America and one of the most characteristic bird-emblems of Venezuela, known for their colourful plumage and recognisable sounds…

… “Drive” is inspired by a singular, unpredictable, and ephemeral event that had a profound effect on the artworld by precipitating the transition from the modern to the postmodern. This event was a car ride on an unfinished portion of the New Jersey Turnpike, between Newark and New Brunswick, on a dark night of 1951.

The driver was modernist sculptor Tony Smith, accompanied by some of his Cooper Union students. Smith described his revelatory experience – one of the most celebrated anecdotes in the annals of twentieth century art – in a 1966 Artforum interview with Samuel J. Wagstaff Jr…

Still on in Brussels from our public space project: The Window Licker
// 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐫 //

‘Rue descendant l’Escalier’ is an in situ proposal for the 1st floor window of the gallery, with no access other than from the street: it is therefore in the public space. The installation takes into account the proportions, the gradient and the descent of Lebeau street, in order to catch a glimpse of the window. The 4-colour carbon paper becomes matter, a trace of memory, rather than a tool as in Mr Kasimir’s other creations. Alternating A3 and A2 formats, the colours create staircases, and the empty space between the bands of colour is a nod to Daniel Buren’s work ‘Bleu sur Jaune’.

Marin Kasimir (b. 1957, Munich) is a contemporary German artist working in Brussels, whose work is largely based on panorama photography, which he uses in public installations, three-dimensional objects and publications.

Still on at the Gallery resuming tomorrow:

‘Geometric Primitive’ [Prim] featuring the works of seven distinguished Latin American artists including 𝐑𝐨𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢.

Rodrigo Sassi is a Brazilian artist born in 1981, he lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil.
Rodrigo Sassi known for his use of recycled material in his sculpture play with geometrical architecture artefact and colonial elements in the work from the exhibition. Taking from these influences and the urban setting, Sassi’s work is created by the relations between these areas, using construction materials and techniques to make structures that act within the space creating its own architecture. Frequently made of found, raw materials, these abstract forms mirror the contrast between brutality and rigidity, but also create the feeling of lightness. His sculptures provide organic shapes that intervene and transform the surrounding space.

The Geometric Abstraction movement is a significant and influential genre that emerged in the early 20th century, characterized by the use of geometric shapes, lines, and forms to create non-representational artworks. Rejecting the representational nature of traditional art, artists embraced abstraction as a means to explore pure visual elements and convey concepts through simple form and/or color. The movement sought to distill reality to its fundamental essence, with artists often employing symmetry, precision, and mathematical principles to achieve visual harmony.
