Meet Micaela, an artist from Argentine living in Ghent. Micaela

To quote her
“I’m particularly interested in creating worlds and telling stories, but I don’t only work as a freelance digital artist, the projects that I enjoy the most are those that involve painting in the street. Following the tradition of Latin American Street Art, I like my works to contain messages that make us rethink the reality in which we live. I believe that as artists we have a fundamental role in the construction of identities and values of our communities. For me Street art works as a democratizing agent of culture since it circulates through non-traditional spheres of art. Any person, regardless of gender, age, origin or religion can have access to this type of visual productions.

I like to think that as an illustrator I learned that any canvas can be a piece of art, and that a blank canvas has infinite possibilities. That is why I made drawing my profession and way of life.”

Meet Ornella, a talented graphic designer, visual communicator, manager and activist who's passionate about Ukrainian identity and design. She co-founded the NGO with the supported of Ministry of Design. Ornella is now working on developing the Ukrainian Design Museum.

Yesterday .M was at Open Design Course to introduce his project REUSEIT (https://www.instagram.com/reuseit.gent/) and lead a workshop around the project.

Reuse-it "subjectively selects objects from Collections of Ghent/De collectie van de Gentenaar and samples patterns and color combinations, for later re-use."
The participants from ODC explored and worked with the collection of Collectie van de Gentenaar and the reuse-it propositions were 🤯.

Have a SNEAK PEEK at the program of this ODC edition. Every week a different topic! 🤓 🤩 🥳

🟢 WEEK 01 - Introduction week - First things first: let's meet! 🙂👋
During the the introduction week we get to know each other, present the program, get to know our tools, discuss about what Open Design is or could be, and explore design methodologies collectively.

🟠 WEEK 02: Physical Computing 🤖
Let’s explore physical computing through micro controllers and teeny tiny computers to achieve pretty cool things. Steady, ready, code !

🟡 WEEK 03: Pixels and Vectors 〽️ 🟨 🟧
Inkscape, Krita ??? What is that ??? They are open source software that we will use to vectorise ideas and identities. 🤯

🟣 WEEK 04: 3D Printing 🖨
Together with FromLab we examine 3D, have the chance to scan objects, modify them and, like magic, bring it back to the physical word with a little help of our printer friend.

🔵 WEEK 05: The basics of the web, web development, data collections. 💻⌨️
Web development, the browser and beyond. We will explore the possibilities that the web browser can offer as an open "window" or "canvas" by taking a quickly dive into the world of coding.

🔴 WEEK 06 to10: Let’s get experimental, the OPEN LAB!!!
After a journey through different topics, we finalize and go deeper into what you want to explore with a project. You can base your research and practice in whatever inspired you during the previews weeks.

🟢 WEEK 11: OPEN DOORS!
During a couple of days we will open the doors of our workshop to share the work in progress that was developed during the last weeks of open design lab.

From September to November 2022, KASK & CONSERVATORIUM School of Arts Gent and Mesh vzw offers an educational program in Open Design for refugees and asylum seekers currently staying in Belgium.

The course program focuses on Open Design as a technological and as a cultural, artistic, and critical practice. The course method is based on co-creation and peer learning.
