Last Saturday, we have held a marvellous event together with Ciné Mangiare screening an all-time classic, The Great Dictator. We are grateful to Dr Veerle Vanden Daele of Kazerne Dossin who provided a wonderful commentary before the film; and of course to everyone that joined us for the good food, the good wine and the laughter!
Dear Cinéssential-enthusiasts,
For our first event this Saturday at Ciné Mangiare, we are very pleased to announce that the introduction to Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator will be provided by none other than Dr. Veerle Vanden Daelen, Deputy Director and Curator of the Kazerne Dossin - a memorial, museum and documentation center on the Holocaust and human rights in Mechelen.
The outdoor screening tickets are sold out, but there are a few left for indoor; but not to worry: Even those that see the movie inside, with their social bubble, can enjoy the dinner and introduction in the outside court yard.
Needless to say, we are very excited about welcoming you this weekend!
Warm regards,
The Cinéssential-team
Dear fellow cinephiles,
Due to the on-going events, we, unfortunately, have to cancel all our screenings planned for this semester.
We are nevertheless still looking forward to meeting, talking and sharing with you all once the situation calms down.
We hope to get back on track next semester.
Until then,
The Cinéssential Crew
CINÉSSENTIAL is a film club committed to screening motion pictures that urge you to think, converse and act. It is established under the auspices of the Ghent Rolin-Jaequemyns International Law Institute (GRILI), as well as the Ghent Institute for International Studies (GIIS) and the Centre for Cinema and Media Studies (CIMS).
The idea was initiated by Dr Luca Ferro and Dra Aysegul Sirakaya (GRILI), and designed as a platform to highlight impactful films that raise important, topical issues related to many disciplines. This was thankfully and enthusiastically embraced by Prof dr Daniël Biltereyst (CIMS), Dr Mathieu Blondeel and Dr Wouter Lips (GIIS), and Cinéssential was born in February 2020.
Every academic semester, we will be screening a set of carefully curated films within a single theme that engage in essential discussions on international justice, human rights, politics and policy, as well as the environment. For example, the Spring 2020 theme will be Cycles of Conflict and feature three films: La Battaglia di Algeri (1970), Waltz with Bashir (2008) and a double documentary feature by two talented UGent doctoral researchers: Maarten Hendriks and Tessa Boeykens.
An interdisciplinary panel of experts will provide their comments and critique following each screening, after which they will engage in a thought-provoking debate with members of audience. We will strive to include many of our amazing colleagues at Ghent University in these panels, to spotlight their fascinating research and expertise.
Cinéssential is hosted in the Filmzaal Plateau and open to the entire UGent family as well as everyone else that is interested in joining the screenings and fruitful discussions we aim to fire up.
