Centexbel at Techtextil, where work and pleasure meet 🤣

Yesterday, 26 March, under the Belgian EU presidency EU2024BE , EURATEX, Fedustria, Centexbel and creamoda a Belgian Fashion organised a successful event on the EU strategy for sustainable and circular textiles.

Around 150 people gathered in Brussels. European policymakers, Belgian politicians, experts from governments and, of course, CEOs of textile and companies, discussed the key components to develop a strategy which will support the of our sector.

Some key take-aways:

💚 Amid economic turmoil and evolving legislation, clear consent prevailed on the imperative for bolstering the competitiveness of European textile and clothing companies. and competitiveness need to go hand in hand.

🚢 With the EU's open policy offering prospects and market expansions, concerns about global competition loom large. Panelists debated how maintaining Europe's competitive edge through common standards, robust market surveillance, and strategic policy alignment, notably with the US and India. But as one speaker said, we always need to remember that it takes two to tango.

💻️ Innovation emerges as the linchpin of bridging sustainability and competitiveness. The announcement of the Horizon Europe Partnership program "Textiles of the Future," along with discussions on collaborative research ventures and skill shortages underscored the industry's commitment to transformative technologies.

On March 14, 2024, Centexbel hosted the yearly Safety Gate event, the EU rapid alert system for hazardous non-food products, at our Zwijnaarde (Gent) location. This event allowed us to highlight our expertise in product safety assessments across our physical, chemical, and burning behavior labs.

We have developed our expertise and knowledge in this field over the past 30 years through research conducted by nearly 200 🧑🏻‍🔬 staff members and with the backing of authorities.

🦚 We are proud to be the choice of 1500 companies each year.

In the afternoon, EU Commissioner Didier Reynders presented the annual report on dangerous non-food products to the Safety Gate assembly and visited our facilities, showing a strong interest in our work and engaging with our laboratory staff and testing managers through insightful questions.

Determination of elemental chemical composition by XRF screening (Reach SVHC)

Physical test on soft-filled toys: attachment of accessories (eyes, nose, …) by tensile tension test (EN71-1)

Fire test on soft-filled toys (EN71-2)

Controlecampagne "Veiligheid van kinderkleding"

👚🩳👨‍👦‍👦Volgens een onderzoek van de FOD economie, voldeden 31 van de 40 kledingstukken voor kinderen die op de Belgische markt werden bemonsterd niet aan de vereisten van de norm EN 14682:2014.

De campagne was gericht op kleding bestemd voor kinderen tot 14 jaar en meer bepaald op de koordjes en hun toebehoren (knopen, stoppers enz.) die op de kleding voorkomen.

Koordjes of trekkoordjes in kinderkleding hebben een rol gespeeld bij een aantal dodelijke ongevallen met kinderen in Europa en elders. Doordat ze meestal eindigen in een knoop of stopper, kunnen die koordjes verstrikt raken in vaste of mobiele toestellen en zo de oorzaak zijn van verwondingen of dodelijke ongevallen door wurging!

Reinforcing fibre in matrix 🌻

📔 Reinforcing fibres are either natural (animal, mineral or cellulose) or synthetic (glass, carbon and polymer). The matrix transfers loads between the fibres, gives the composite its shape and surface finish.

The term “polyamide” refers to a wide range of different materials. A good measure of this variety is tensile strength.
Nylon 6, an aliphatic polyamide, has a tensile strength of approximately 40 MPa. Kevlar® 29, an aromatic polyamide, has a tensile strength of 3600 MPa.
This wide difference in properties reflects the wide variety of materials in the polyamide group.
