Wishing everyone a Happy with this spooktacular black jersey evening dress by John Bates for Jean Varon! Glamorous and gothic, this gorgeous full-skirted gown features an embroidered net panel at the back with a spider web design worked in black thread, sequins, and beads 🕸️ Billowing bishop sleeves and a tie belt complete this enchanting look from Autumn/Winter 1973.

L'inglese J. Howell Russel era cresciuto a Workington (Cumberland, Inghilterra), dove da ragazzo aveva iniziato a lavorare in una ferriera (stabilimento siderurgico), ma a causa di un infortunio sul lavoro si era poi recato in Francia.
Qui iniziò ad interessarsi al disegno di moda e dei costumi teatrali e dopo aver frequentato la scuola d'arte a Clifton, vicino a Bristol, iniziò una collaborazione come disegnatore di costumi teatrali, al Prince's Theatre, poi al Alhambra di Londra ed anche in vari teatri di Chicago, dove creò i costumi per gli spettacoli Ali Baba (1892), Sinbad (1893) e Aladdin, Jr. (1894).
