🍽️OPEN CALL: MANGÉ
Mangé is an experimental food performance that challenges our consumer culture. The performance is the brainchild of creative duo Kaat and Bert. Within the expo of DE/CONSTRUCTIE on April 18, they want to engage the public with a slaughterhouse experience, providing a pinching criticism on overconsumption.
To bring the performance to a successful conclusion, they need your help. Are you interested in contributing to Mangé, have you always wandered what it’s like behind the scenes of performance art or are you simply looking for inspiration for your own creative practices? Apply now for one of the following roles:
• Dishwasher during the performance (7 pm til 11 pm)
• Runner in Ghent (picking up food packets on a schedulein Ghent using your own bike)
• Servant during the performance (preferably someone with experience in performance art or theatre, or who wants to gain experience)
• Assistent scenographer during the construction of the performance
• Cook/kitchen help before and during the performance
Interested? Apply by sending an e-mail to [email protected] 🍝
The second pair of artists who will be amazing us with their take on De/construction are and
Who is Ine Kools?
With a background as a master in fine arts and sculpture, Ine is inspired by the ever-changing nature of urban landscapes and the relationship between people and space. She challenges the viewer, questions the role of the visitor in the art world, and reinterprets these possibilities. She achieves this by experimenting with industrial materials and the proportions of a space within an already defined space.
" De/construction in cities, architecture, and infrastructure but also the perception of the spectator are all important elements that influence my work"
Who is Ploy?
Ploy Thongchamnan (°1996, Thailand) is a transdisciplinary artist who works with natural and discarded materials. She creates her art installations with a focus on design with artistic interpretation. Ploy approaches many disciplines such as biology, art, and technology, and it's the social aspect of Ploy's work that brings the audience together.
Ploy is currently studying at the Pxl-mad in Hasselt.
“My motivation lies in the contrast of the theme. I want to approach the thin line between construction and deconstruction through a complex theme such as culture.”
Want to know or see more? Come to see them at the .gent from 18/05 to 26/05
Let's introduce our de/constructors, connectors and artists who are going to transform our expo from 18/05 till 26/05!
The first three are Ane Rubio, Kaat and Bert.
Who is Ane Rubio Echazarra?
It all started when Clay became her first material, and since then her interests are in constant transition. Evolving to now use time and momentarily as her medium for her interventions, where interaction contributes to her work. She is now currently studying ceramics at the PXL-MAD In Hasselt.
"De/Construction as a theme is something that even with a different approach, defines my work at ther moment."- Ane
Who are Kaat Claes and Bert Bogaerts?
Kaat and Bert both study the masterclass in design for impact at the Luca school of arts in Gent. Their creative character creates an abundance of ideas. They strive towards making an impact in the art field in ways that bring people together.
" Working together with curating the young gives us the opportunity to perform Mange. A performance where we tried to deconstruct the act of dining together, but the setting is less comfortable than you think."
- Kaat en Bert

✨MEET THE ARTISTS✨
Our fifth and final artist on display is born and raised in Leuven. Dauwke Van Kerckhove started dancing at Aike Raes Dance Center at the age of three. As soon as she turned 18 she moved to Vienna to pursue her professional dance dream. There she studied at the Music and Art University for two years before transferring to the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds. In July 2023 she graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Performing Contemporary Dance. Now she is back in Belgium, working as a freelance artist. Dauwke’s contribution to Out & aBouts will be the first work she releases as a professional dancer.
Excited to discover her interpretation of the bodies featured in the works of Dieric Bouts? Come and have a look at the Out & aBouts expo from 16/11 to 09/12.
✨MEET THE ARTISTS✨
Our youngest artist represented at the Out & aBouts expo likes to understand the world better by diving deeper into art history. Pina Geyskens recently graduated from her bachelor free graphics and has already established a noteworthy practice. By referencing art history, she creates layered works typically using a myriad of techniques and hidden meanings.
Excited to see how she has interpreted Bouts in her contemporary practice? Have a look starting from this Thursday 16/11 until 09/12.
✨MEET THE ARTISTS✨
About time we reveal to you the gems you can find during Out & aBouts.
Nel Maertens is an omnivalent artist. Besides her work in textiles and costume design, she also focuses on an autonomous fine art practice.
Exploring color, material, writing and female energy, her work is intuitive and spontaneous.
A perfect modern style to merge with Dieric Bouts' work!
Sounds intriguing, right?
You can enjoy her work from 16/11 tot 9/12 in Leuven!
✨MEET THE ARTISTS✨
About time we reveal to you the gems you can find during the Out & aBouts walk.
Ynne De Wever is a multidisciplinary visual artist with an eye for poetry. She’s an avid collector who obsessively captures her surroundings in photographs; building an archive of snapshots that evokes only vague memories. In doing so, she tries to tie melancholy and playfulness together in an effort to bridge emotional extremes.
Wondering how Ynne will connect her practice to the legacy of Dieric Bouts? You can come explore her work from 16/11 to 09/12.
✨ MEET THE ARTISTS ✨
About time we reveal to you the gems you can find during the Out & Abouts walk. The first artist we would like to highlight is Beppe Geerts, illustrator and graphic designer with a heart for photography. She has taken part in multiple exhibitions from solo to group. Beppe finds inspiration in Flemish culture in everyday life scenery. That's not the only common ground she shares with Bouts, she also has an interest in strange perspectives, portraits and everyday objects.
Wondering what she's bringing upon your path? Swing by the Vaartkom in Leuven from 16/11 to 09/12 and find out for yourself!
About yesterdays workshop 📸
Learning to work with the for the public mediation of our upcoming expo Out & aBouts. A fun collab with .bamm ❤️
In this week’s The Perspective, you get to meet artlover Fien 🧡 She's been a member of Curating The Young since last year and has a great interest in public mediation. This year she’s going to focus on teambuilding and organizing fun activities for the whole team. Read about her experience below!
“Why am I involved in Curating The Young? On the one hand to meet like-minded people, on the other hand to explore 'the’ art world. One of my motivations is the sense of wonder. Amazement at (young) people who can create something, amazement at the unique locations where you sometimes end up, and the ability to escape the everyday world for a while. I want to share the amazement that I feel for art with others in an accessible way. Curating The Young is a perfect platform to experiment with this. Although public mediation unconsciously took a back seat during the last two exhibitions, it is one of the most important factors to respond to. Ultimately you create an exhibition for the public. With our exhibitions, we want the public to remember it, experience it or be triggered to go to other exhibitions. With Curating The Young we think further about how we can reach the widest possible audience.”

Tomorrow we’re starting out with a whole new bunch of Curating The Young members! In The Perspective you get the chance to meet them. We would love to introduce you to Diete. She started out as a new member last year, but she will continue to be a part of CTY this year. Needless to say, we're very excited about that 🧡
“As an art history student, I have a big love for art. Because of my highly theoretical studies, I also wanted to do something practical, like curating art. CTY has taught me how versatile making an exhibition can be: from creating an open call to installing the selected works. I enjoy the varying tasks and the freedom to work things out on my own. But it’s not always fun and games; last minute cancellations, damaged works or collaborations with not so communicative people etc. are all things that can happen. However, this also happens on a professional level, so it is important to learn to deal with those kind of issues. Hence, this is a wise lesson I have learned: no matter how chaotic things may be, everything comes together.
It’s also nice to make use of the big network CTY has, and collaborate with other organizations. For our first exhibition this year, we collaborated with the maakleerplek and affair, who threw an amazing party at the end of the exhibition. That must be one of my favorite moments!"
In THE PERSPECTIVE you get an inside view on what it’s like to be a part of Curating The Young. This week: meet Hannelore!
“I’m a big art enthusiast in every sense. I love to explore new expositions, to indulge myself in art theory and all the different movements in the history of art, and I’m also a painter myself. I get so much energy from creating, but I was also curious about what the other side looked like: what’s the process of setting up an exposition? How do you choose a theme that ties everything together, and select artists and artworks to make this concept come to life? And how does it all come together logistically? I learned about these topics and so much more this year, side by side with a fantastic team full of likeminded people with great visions. We worked together with amazing young artists and really made the best of it, no matter if things didn’t always go as planned, or if we faced obstacles like difficult communication or freezing cold conditions. We really gave it all and I’m so proud of what we’ve already achieved this year. Right at this moment, our third exposition is slowly but surely coming together and I can’t wait to see the end result.”
⏩️ Would you also like to be a member of CTY? You can apply now at curatingtheyoung.be, make sure to do it fast ‘cause the deadline is tomorrow!

We're happy to introduce a new format, The Perspective, in which the members of CTY talk about elements of the process of exhibition making.
This time, Gertjan gives an insight into the process of the artist selection for ENSEMBLE, our new expo opening in a couple of days!
" This time we had a staggering number of about 75 applications in only a couple of weeks. Every selection process is different, as a lot of it depends on the location, approach and timing of the exhibition. As we work with a team of multiple curators, the first step is to each go through every single application and select the strongest portfolios. Starting with a rough selection, based on common picks, we discussed these portfolios together with the location in mind. We tried to form connections between bodies of work that could create interesting dialogues. As we are now working with a huge space, matters of size and multiplicity were relevant factors to take into consideration. After hours of discussion, we narrowed the selection down to 9 artists we could see fit well in the space and in relation to each other.
It’s always hard to inform people that have not been selected for the exhibition. It’s a matter of making clear that it’s not so much about quality per se, but a lot of times about contingent factors that are dependent on the specific circumstances in which the current exhibition is being developed.
It’s amazing to go through all these refreshing and qualitative portfolios and see what young artists are working on. It’s an honor to get close to these works and to be able to give them the space that they deserve. "
