Christmas tree in quartz
I'm a big fan of inclusions in gems like these wonderful intergrown needles (known as acicular crystals) of actinolite in a prism of silicon dioxide. A member of the extensive amphibole family of minerals, there are several forms of this mineral depending on its chemistry, the most well known being one of the forms of asbestos and nephrite (one of the two minerals recognised under the umbrella term jade). Another gemmy form popular amongst collectors are the yellow to green cats eye stones found in Taiwan, Canada and Madagascar.
Crystals are usually fine and fibrous, one way to tell amphiboles from another common mineral family are the longer finer crystals as opposed to the stubby prisms of the pyroxene family. The shape gave us the name, which comes from the Greek word for rays. Actinolite is also part of a solid solution series, in which different ions interchange freely within the crystal structure, in this case magnesium and iron, depending on the chemistry and ambient conditions of crystallisation. The magnesium rich end member is known as tremolite.
Its main mode of formation is during low to medium pressure/temperature metamorphism, for example aureoles of baked and transformed country rocks surrounding a granitoid intrusion or when limestones are transformed during mountain building events. The colour is usually a dark green (induced by iron selectively absorbing the other wavelengths), often appearing opaque and black unless a bright light is used.
The dark sharp needles in the photo are another common occurrence, though it is hard to say whether the quartz grew around already existing crystals (known as proto genetic) or whether they both exsolved together as a solution of mineralisad water cooled (known as syngenetic). Either way they make for a beautiful celebration of the end of the year (family week as they call it here), masquerading as the pine tree that was central to the old European pagan tradition of Yule. I'd rather this one in my living room, it's prettier and won't shed needles on my living room floor.

On this DEM of the region around Sagalassos the Sagalassos Fault is indicated in red. The epicenter of the M5.2 earthquake (24.08.2014) is indicated. The hypocenter is at 10 km depth, so most probably on "our" Sagalassos Fault :-)
