Tiny house with exquisite frescoes uncovered in Pompeii
Archaeologists have unveiled a newly discovered residence in Pompeii, known as the House of Phaedra. This small yet exquisitely decorated home was uncovered during excavations along Via dell’Abbondanza and showcases an array of stunning frescoes.
The House of Phaedra, named after the mythological queen of Athens, features vibrant wall paintings that include mythological scenes, such as a sexual encounter between a satyr and a nymph, and depictions of the gods Venus and Adonis. Notably, one fresco illustrates the tragic narrative of Phaedra and her stepson Hippolytus, whom she wrongfully accused of assault after he rejected her advances...

🎨 Dive into the vibrant world of Edvard Munch with his captivating piece, "Dance on the Beach" (1900). This artwork showcases Munch's unique flair in the realm of Expressionism, employing expressive color and dynamic human forms to delve into the depths of human emotion and interaction.
In "Dance on the Beach," your eyes are treated to a sweeping view of figures intertwined in a dance, their forms rendered with fluid, almost ghostly strokes that evoke a sense of movement and fleeting moments. The scene is set against a dimly lit backdrop, possibly under the muted glow of twilight, which adds a mystical atmosphere to the piece. This painting not only reflects Munch's expert manipulation of form and color to convey emotional and psychological states but also encapsulates his ability to distort reality for emotional impact, characteristic of his broader oeuvre.
The painting stirred controversy and intrigue alike, emblematic of Munch’s lifelong fascination with themes of life, love, fear, death, and melancholy. These motifs often challenged societal norms of his time, invoking varied reactions from his audience and critics. His bold, unfiltered expression of raw human emotion opened up new avenues in the art of the 20th century, setting the stage for modernist explorations of feeling and form.
"Dance on the Beach" stands as a testament to Munch’s enduring influence on visual art and remains a captivating study in the conveyance of the human condition through art.
“Art is poetry, criticism, and the transcendent. There are two different paths that lead to it. One is the embodiment of one’s internal images. The other is the combining of one’s inner thoughts and outer reality.” Lee Ufan 이우환
(*)”For his seven-decade-long practice, Lee Ufan opted for the latter. A critical force behind the Mono-ha (School of Things) and Dansaekhwa movements, the artist, writer, and philosopher is known for sculptures and paintings that render the relationship and energy between matter, viewer, time, and space.
Lee was born in Japanese-occupied Korea in 1936, moved to Japan in 1956, and, in 1968, became a leading theorist and member of Mono-ha, an avant-garde movement focused on “not making” and instead “revealing the world as it is,” as a critique of representational art and departure from Western modernism. The first work of his seminal Relatum (1968– ) series, a granite stone dropped onto layered sheets of glass and steel, was made in the same year. In 1972, Lee renamed and preemptively named all of his past and future three-dimensional works Relatum, a term that refers to an assemblage of related things. He then began his landmark painting series From Point and From Line (both 1973–84), which would later forge his imperative presence in the formation of the Korean monochrome painting movement, Dansaekhwa.”
