The Drunk Railroad, Istria, Croatia, known for its uneven, crooked, and meandering tracks, was built from 1948 to 1951 to transport coal from Istrian mines to the port in Rijeka. In its heyday in the late fifties and early sixties, up to a hundred coal wagons traversed the railway daily.
With the closure of Istrian coal mines, the traffic dwindled, and the last train passed through in 1999. Abandoned and unmaintained, abundant rains triggered landslides, causing a section to collapse. The tracks, attached to wooden sleepers, twisted and hung in some parts, creating a photogenic appearance and earning it the nickname "Drunk Railroad."
Despite its amusing name, the construction of this railway was far from cheerful, involving "voluntary work" during labor actions. The nickname "Siberian railroad" arose due to strong winds during construction. Facing a shortage of manpower, workers were brought in from various parts of Yugoslavia, while many Istrian residents fled abroad to avoid forced labor.

📌 Eastern Mound of Karanovo
While they were under Roman rule, the ancient Thracians who lived where today's Karanovo village, by Nova Zagora, is, created a necropolis of tumuli.
In 2008 archaeologists detected that treasure-hunters had dug the so-called Eastern Mound, which was 11 m high and had a diameter of 77 m.
The rescue excavations which followed discovered, in the mound's southeastern section, a perfectly preserved chariot, buried just metres off the brick grave of its Thracian aristocratic owner. The find was from the mid-1st Century AD. The chariot was dismantled before the burial, and the skeletons of a sacrificed hunting dog and of two horses lay nearby, perfectly preserved. Undisturbed by robbers, the dead man's grave contained precious objects, including expensive weapons and luxurious cups of glass and silver, imported from Rome.
