Nara Roesler Rio de Janeiro is pleased to present ‘Mães’, an exhibition that brings together works by (Sent, Switzerland, 1948) and (Bristol, UK, 1945). The show, which opens to the public on September 10, celebrates the tenth anniversary of the gallery in Rio and will feature new works by both artists, including site-specific works by Richard Long created especially for the occasion.

Despite their different artistic and personal paths, Long and Vital share a friendship and a bond that transcends the field of art. The title chosen by the artists for the exhibition is a tribute to their mothers. Richard Long’s mother, Frances, from Bristol, England, was born in Rio de Janeiro. Long, in turn, established a relationship of admiration and affection with Maria, Not Vital’s mother. On Maria’s 100th birthday in 2016, Long dedicated a new edition of his famous series, begun in 1971, entitled ‘A Hundred Mile Walk’ - in which he covered the distance between Stonehenge and the source of the Thames - to her.

The exhibition ‘Mães’ opens to the public next Tuesday, September 10, and remains on view at through October 26. Stay tuned to our socials to learn more about the exhibition and ’s work.

Today is the last day to visit ‘Marco Castillo: The Hands of the Collector’, a solo exhibition by the Cuban artist Marco A. Castillo curated by , on view at , in Michigan, United States.

The exhibition presents several bodies of work by Castillo, which often references the aerial view characteristic of plans that interior designers use to design a room, but in the exhibition the objects are in turbulence. The work is a freeze-frame of deconstruction, a reference to the demise of the autonomy of Cuban artists and the loss of creative life under a dictatorship.

Nara Roesler New York is pleased to present ‘Japan In/Out Brazil’, a group exhibition encompassing three generational examples representing the creative continuity of Japanese-Brazilian culture. The show aims to draw a constellation of cultural exchanges between Japan and Brazil through the work of three artists sharing their common Japanese-Brazilian experience: (1913-2014), (1949), and (1988). Their works manifest with outstanding clarity, almost emblematically, the symbolic resonance of their artistic time: Ohtake’s organic abstraction, Okumura’s site-specific geometric opticality, and Ogawa’s figuration informed by genre and ancestral narratives.

The exhibition’s opening reception takes place at Nara Roesler New York next Wednesday, September 4, from 6pm—8pm. Stay tuned to our socials to learn more about it.

“In a cadence of movements or scenes, the exhibitions opens with symbols, signs, forms and attributes drawn from Alberto Pitta’s profound knowledge of the world of Candomblé, a religion, conception of life and philosophy of the universe brought by the enslaved peoples of Africa to Brazil. The three figures that dominate the entrance represent Ogun, the Orixá or god of protection and labour, who stand before us, defiant, ready, and at the vanguard, followed by those who are summoned to this assembly and celebration of Alcácer of Sal’s diasporic ancestors.” mentions the curator of the exhibition.

This is the last week to visit ‘Seasons of the soul’, ’s latest exhibition currently on view at The Rothko Museum, in Daugavpils, Latvia.

In a recent interview for New City Brazil, the artist elaborated on the symbols and signs present in her pictorial research:
“They are hand-written notations in my paintings scribbled with charcoal. Sometimes they are hard to read under the layers of color and the diluted confusion of memory. The small copper crosses are remaining elements of a long-gone pictorial narrative. Of course, crosses have a range of symbolic associations: emergency, hospital, pharmacy, ambulance, cure, humanitarian aid, etc., but in my work the cross also conveys the passage from life to death.”

In the context of the Olympics, we highlight the exhibition ‘Syndicat des Olympiades’, by , on view at .galerie.cac.noisylesec, located in the suburbs of Paris, France, which brings together works developed during his residency at the institution.

The posters for ‘Posters du Syndicat des Olympiades’ (2024) were made from photographs of athletes from local sports associations. As well as highlighting the communal and often political nature of sport, the posters also revisit the political history of Noisy-le-Sec, which in the past played an important role in France’s historical political struggles, with its trade unions and cooperatives.

Part of the posters depict female basketball players who are part of the ‘Basquet por Toutes’ movement. These women of Muslim origin have withdrawn from official competitions due to the French government’s measure preventing them from playing with a veil, on the pretext that France is a secular country. In order to overcome this excluding measure, the members of the group use sport as an instrument of political resistance for citizenship.

In the words of the artist, “sport is undoubtedly one of the unifiers of the community. But the body that practises sport is also a body engaged in coexistence with others; it is also a body that fights (...) As well as making the suburbs more complex to look at, the project invites the public to think about the other side of this great event that is the Olympic Games”.
