Swimming is a natural activity that is synonymous with living in the Bahamas. Bahamians and tourists of all ages enjoy the beautiful turquoise water and gorgeous beaches on a daily basis. Hence, the opportunity for drowning is very real. A drowning situation can happen so quickly and so unexpectedly that itโ€™s easy to be caught off-guard. The first step to saving someone who is drowning is to determine for sure whether they really are drowning. If they have gone underwater and cannot speak or yell, that can be a sign that they are in trouble.
Having official ๐…๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐€๐ข๐ & ๐‚๐๐‘ ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  can be the major factor regarding what happens next. Would it be a panic, alarming and frantic response where valuable time is lost that could have been used to save the victimโ€™s life or a decisive jump to action by a trained certified first responder who will quickly assess the situation take the appropriate lifesaving action?
For ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ๐ง๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฏ๐ข๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฌ, the ๐€๐ฆ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ง ๐‡๐ž๐š๐ซ๐ญ ๐€๐ฌ๐ฌ๐จ๐œ๐ข๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง recommends immediate ๐‚๐๐‘ with chest compressions and rescue breaths as people underwater die because of a lack of oxygen.
We would advocate for parents knowing CPR, and particularly if they have a pool, they should become familiar and are trained in mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing.
All children should be knowledgeable about CPR as Seconds count in a crisis when amongst their peers while on the beach and during the summer months especially.
We would like to make sure that all beaches and public spaces have Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Stations available in the event of an emergency.
Drowning occurs when water comes into contact with the larynx (voice box). After an initial gasp, there is a period of voluntary breath-holding. This is followed by a spasm of the larynx and the development of hypoxemia (hypo=low + ox=oxygen + emia=blood), or decreased levels of oxygen in the bloodstream.
The prognosis for many drowning victims is poor. The brain does not tolerate a lack of oxygen well and the amount of potential damage is dependent upon the time the patient spends hypoxemic in the water.
The key to the treatment of drowning is

Most drownings are preventable, and simple steps can be taken to help with water safety.

The Importance of AEDs within our Public & Private Facilities

Seconds Count offers commercial and public access Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). We specialize in providing AED Routine Maintenance & Quality Assurance.
YOU HAVE THE POWER TO RESTART A HEART, WE CAN SHOW YOU HOW. You have the potential to save thousands of lives. Immediate CPR and use of an AED can double, or even triple, survival rates. Is your workforce prepared? It is a safe and easy-to-use device that delivers a therapeutic electric shock to the heart as treatment for a victim in Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).
An AED can be a lifesaving tool but can be useless if not maintained. An AED maintenance schedule is imperative to keeping your device functioning properly. A complete program that includes risk assessment, training, maintenance and recordkeeping must be in place.
A Sudden Cardiac Arrest occurs when an electrical malfunction in the heart causes it to beat in an irregular rhythm. Blood cannot be pumped around the body, starving the brain and other organs of oxygen. The only treatment for a Sudden Cardiac Arrest is CPR and the use of a defibrillator, which can restore the heartโ€™s natural rhythm. If this is administered in the first 3-5 minutes after the SCA, the victim has a 74% chance of survival โ€“ however with every minute that passes their chance of survival decreases by 10%.
In New Providence, the average ambulance response time is 15-45mins and on most of our Family Islands thereโ€™s no ambulance available and the clinics are miles away. Therefore, it is vital for our communities, schools, homes, businesses, public and private facilities to have a defibrillator on site; and know what to do if a staff member, customer or family member suffers a SCA. Immediate treatment with CPR and a defibrillator could save a lifeโ€ฆSeconds Count!
Your facilityโ€™s AED cannot save a life if no one can find it! Finding the best placement for your AED is crucial. Locating an AED in a highly visible and public location can mean the difference between life and death. We, at Seconds Count, will inspect each facility and recommend a suitable location for the Installation of the AED.
Our CPR AED classes will tell you everything you need to know about defibrillators, including the Chain of Survival Protocols and what to do if you think someone is in SCA.
Itโ€™s Imperative that our public and private facilities have AEDS on site and we can advise you. Give us a call, we want to help!
All buildings have fire extinguishers; however no visible working AEDs for these facilities or persons knowledgeable of how to use them.

Leave your AED compliance and maintenance to the AED professionals!
We, here in the Bahamas must strive to be in a state of readinessโ€ฆ.. SECONDS COUNT!

NOSEBLEEDS โ€“ TILT HEAD FORWARD OR BACKWARD.

Nosebleeds are one of those annoying life occurrences that are not really a medical emergency but can look quite scary for those not used to them. There are a few misconceptions floating around on how to best manage nosebleeds and we are here to set the record straight!

TILT HEAD FORWARD OR BACKWARD?
This one has sparked huge debate across nosebleed sufferers. More often than not, we would see people pinching their nose and tilting their head back to stop the blood running out their nose. This is a big no-no. Not only does the blood run down the back of the throat (and tastes disgusting) it also has the potential to accidentally run into your airway and cause choking.
Sit with your head tilted forward and pinch the bridge of your nose to try to stop the bleeding. Hold a towel or wad of tissues underneath your nose to catch the blood. If you are able, a cold pack will work very well as it causes the blood vessels to constrict. Within 5-10 minutes, the bleeding should have slowed and eventually stopped.

WHY DO I NEED TO PINCH MY NOSE?
The reason for the nose pinching is due to the cause of the nosebleed. Most of them are caused when a blood vessel leaks in the soft cartilage of the nose, otherwise known as an anterior nosebleed. By pinching the bridge of your nose, you are placing pressure on the vessel, allowing the blood flow to slow and eventually stop.
THE DONโ€™TS
โ€ข DONโ€™T lie down on your back during a nosebleed. Again, this could cause the blood to run down your throat and into your airway.

โ€ข DONโ€™T blow your nose. This could severely irritate your nasal passage and cause the bleeding to worsen.

โ€ข DONโ€™T eat hot or spicy food within a few hours of a nosebleed. This dilates your blood vessels and could cause the bleeding to start again.

โ€ข DONโ€™T place any objects inside your nose to stop the bleeding. This includes tissues, tampons, cotton balls or paper towel.

WHAT IF THE BLEEDING DOESNโ€™T STOP?
If bleeding is still persisting after an hour or you start feeling weak or nauseous seek medical attention. And donโ€™t forget to keep your first aid kit up to date!
