Bahama Hand Prints was established in Nassau, The Bahamas in1966 by artists Helen Astarita and Berta Sands. On a trip to the Florida Keys, the two visited a small factory in Key West where they observed fabric being hand printed, using silk-screens. Fabric on its way to Long Island, Bahamas to be made into fabulous straw bags. All our straw is sourced and sewn by local artisians in Long Island and then sent on the boat up to Nassau. Our Story
Bahama Hand Prints was established in Nassau, The Bahamas in 1966 by artists Helen Astarita and Berta Sands. We have 150 trade marked prints designed by a collection of Bahmian artists over the years that can be printed in any colour. We use the traditional process of silk screen printing and are proud to produce an authentic Bahamian products that are inspired by the colours of the Bahamas.
The tradition of hand screen-printing continues under the ownership of David and Alannah van Onselen, who purchased the company in 2018. While the signature style of Bahama Hand Prints began with Helen and Berta, and can be seen in our collection of vintage designs, it continues to evolve. From the printing table, our fabric is used to create garments and accessories, which are developed in-house, crafted by our talented sewing team and introduced as a New Collection each Fall.
Our Boutiques
Bahama Hand Prints flag ship boutique can be found on Ernest Street, Nassau. The store that backs onto our factory is collection of vivid colours, captivating prints and fine fabrics combined in our collection of garments, bags and home accessories. Our Fabric Room is a colourful and inspiring space, containing a wide variety of fabrics available by the yard for home design and other projects. Stop in to watch our hand screen printing happen in real time and do a tour of our factory.
We are also proud to be expanding with the opening of two new stores by the end of this year - one at The Island House, Nassau and the other in Governors Harbour, Eleuthera. We hope to have both these additional stores open by Thanksgiving weekend. Our website is also being revamped and once it is finished look forward to showing you a more informative website where you can shop our beautiful, Bahama made products online from anywhere in the world.
Custom Printed Fabric
At Bahama Hand Prints, fabric may also be custom printed to the customer’s specifications. A print can be chosen from our repertoire of designs and hand printed in the colour or colours desired, on any one of the ground fabrics we offer, including cotton poplin, twill, cotton-linen blends, linen and outdoor fabric. We Welcome Visitors
Visitors are welcome to drop-in at the factory and watch our printers at work. It is a thrilling experience to observe yards of plain fabric being transformed into colourful art, with designs that capture the beauty of The Bahama Islands.
