Camera Obscura...Tucked away in the Shirley street Plaza, on the southern side of the street, is a unique business which traces its existence back to the year 1685. It was in that year that Johann Zahn designed the prototype for the first camera. Several weeks ago, a generous gift of a portrait session, compliments of Rodger Dwight Eisenhower Sands, proprietor of Rodger D Photography , brought my wife Barbara, into his studio. Before we walked into the building, I had some preconceived ideas of what to expect, such as a sterile, cold environment with a Perfunctory, non smiling attendant who spoke little else except:" Look this way, hold it ! Smile". Then the door opened and we were welcomed with a flourish of enthusiasm of the doorkeeper of the Louvre museum on Rue de Rivoli , by Mr. Sands himself. After observing the necessary safety protocols, we were privy to a re-education of what excellence in photography is. The interior of the establishment was tastefully decorated, with a gorgeous collection of eclectic portraits, with the signature Rodger D touch, which sets this artistic photographer miles apart from his peers. All of his portraits are gaze worthy, artistically posed and placed, all the while exuding a feeling of history. What jumped out at me was the dozens of vintage cameras that were strategically placed and used in the decor of the lobby and also His office. It was obvious that much thought, taste and skill, merged to make the environs of this studio breathtaking, for sure. The warmth, charm, wit and great knowledge of Rodger D, impressed me considerably. Also what was refreshing was the treasury of tasteful music which was played in the background, his knowledge of the Classics and Golden Oldies, belied his still youthful looks. And then it was time for the portrait session, here was where I got to see and appreciate the perfection, artistry and extreme love for his craft, on full display. Lighting, filters, boom, reflectors, gaff and some other implements and appliances that I know little about. The session was long but truly enjoyable, as Mr. Sands is a stickler for detail and even the errant stand of hair, had to be in place. This still young man was seemingly mesmerized while doing the shooting, he danced, he jumped, he laughed and he was as effusive as one directing a 91 member Symphony orchestra. Louis Daguerre and Joseph Niepce would be very proud of the work ethic resident at Rodger D Photography. There was no doubt in my mind that Mr. Sands enjoys his work, he was totally transfixed, a glow of some kind was visible on his face. I can only say that our time there that afternoon was one of total enjoyment, I was totally impressed. As my wife, daughter and I were leaving, I realized two things: Rodger D and I shared an appreciation for artistic expression and yes were also friends. More than friends, I would dare to say: kindred Spirits. Everywhere you turn, there are people with cell phones and photos are shot by the millions each day, the newly minted digital revolution has made this possible. However if you desire professional portrait photography that still is the benchmark of the craft, you would go to Rodger D Photography.
