Amidst the mystical land of Bhutan, the extraordinary oasis of Gasa Tsachu (natural hot springs) beckons with its naturally warm, mineral-rich waters to soothe the weary soul. Legends intertwine as Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel's blessings infuse the springs, while whispers of spirits descending from the mountains indicate the perfect hour for a healing soak. From dawn to dusk, life thrives around the springs, where old ladies chat, monks chant, and children play joyfully. A dip in these sacred waters promises relief for ailments and tranquility for the spirit. Though swept away by a flash flood, it was announced this week that the Tsachu will soon rise again, ready to welcome adventurers seeking solace amidst its enchanting embrace.

We spend a lot of time outdoors seeking new locations and encounters with mysterious souls. So why not unveil the unique Bhutanese spirit through the perspectives of the extraordinary people we meet along the way? We begin with author and ambitious social scientist, Dechen Rabgyal, asking the question, “What is Happiness?”

As you enter, the Himalayan peaks loom like mystical giants. Paro Airport, born from the dreams of yesteryear, now stands as Bhutan's gateway to the world. Surrounded by a staggering natural beauty, this uncongested oasis is a refuge where smiles are currency, and happiness is a carbon-negative religion. A peculiar breed of traveler arrives here, seeking the taste of a land that whispers secrets to the soul, leaving behind the mundane and embracing the compassion that is the Bhutanese spirit.

In the rugged, off-the-grid enclave of Haa Village, Bhutan unveils its well-kept secrets to the intrepid few who dare to venture beyond the tourist-beaten path. It was only in 2002 that this gem opened its gates to foreign guests, and ever since, it has remained a coveted destination for the boldest souls seeking the untamed allure of the unknown. Here, in the heart of the Haa district, where the mythical meets the mundane, you'll find highland lakes shimmering with untold tales, and sacred lands steeped in enigmatic legends that dance with the imagination. As the sun sets behind the awe-inspiring silhouette of the Meri Puensum mountains, the sky turns into a kaleidoscope of colors, treating fortunate eyes to mesmerizing light shows. Trekking through the secluded villages, untouched for centuries, you'll witness a time-honored culture that thrives amidst the lush greenery and mystical air. Temples that predate the arrival of Guru Padmasambhava himself whisper stories of the past, while the northern border with Chinese Tibet evokes ancient trade routes. Amidst all this, Haa's people, living in harmony with nature, cultivate the land's bounty, preserving their deep-rooted traditions and the reverence for their local protector deities. Haa Village: a realm where adventure transcends into revelation, and where the heart of Bhutan beats in sync with the spirit of the wild.

As the Paro Tsechu roars to life on the 10th day of the second lunar month, the monks, having devoted sixty days to prayer and practice, unleash meticulously rehearsed dance steps to summon the deities. The masked nang-chham dazzles in Rinpung Dzong's courtyard on day one, but subsequent festivities spill into an open space to accommodate the eager crowds dressed in their finest kiras and ghos. For the Bhutanese, the Tsechu bestows blessings and spiritual protection. As the final day dawns, an ancient thangka, the thongdrol, unfurls, capturing the first rays and cleansing the onlookers of their sins for the year ahead.

In the realm of Bhutan, where dragons and mysticism dance hand in hand, one encounters the captivating garment known as the gho—a cloak of elegance that shrouds the Bhutanese men in a mesmerizing allure. A traveler exploring this land of ancient wonder would find themselves entangled in a tapestry of cultural sophistication, wrapped in the rich folds of the gho's timeless charm. This intriguing sartorial phenomenon veils the wearer in an aura of effortless formality, as if stepping out of a vivid dream into a festival of vivid colors and rhythmic traditions. The gho's fine craftsmanship and regal bearing create a seamless fusion of past and present, a garment that whispers secrets of past legends.

Our team member, .studer, had this encounter with the young boy, donning his gho, as they both entered a majestic dzong, or fortress.
