What do you think? Many of you have heard us say this...The future of the world, the most powerful emerging trends in every field of human endeavour are being defined by distributed systems...new patterns of free enterprise, economic activity, health systems, education systems, that are anchored in the community at the neighborhood level. Mark Boyle's experience (below) is not the solution but his explanation (worth the read) highlights a big part of the current problem. Captialists like to blur the lines between Capitalism (the rule of accumulated capital) and Free Enterprise (read the indomitable human spirit) they are not the same thing.

A step for Atlanta, a bigger step for local, urban farming!

It’s a big day for urban ag in the city of Atlanta!

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed unveiled something huge today (Aug. 24). He, city officials, and UGA & Wal-Mart reps announced the Urban Farm Design Competition to transform .8 acres of land directly across from City Hall into a thriving demonstration farm, a key component of the City of Atlanta’s Power to Change sustainability plan.

The Trinity Avenue Farm when finished (Spring 2012 estimate), will be a model urban agriculture showcasing how fresh food can be grown locally and sustainably.

The winners of the farm design competition will receive $35,000, provided by Wal-Mart. Entrants must be residents of the state of Georgia.

The design competition is open to professionals, students and educators in agriculture, architecture, construction, design, development, engineering, horticulture, landscape architecture, planning and others fields interested in urban agriculture.

The winning farm design will be developed on lot located across the street from City Hall on the corner of Trinity and Central Avenues (formerly the site of the Atlanta traffic court building). The physical address is 104 Trinity Avenue, Atlanta, GA, 30303.

Submissions must be made on the website by Nov. 1, 2011 at 5 p.m.
Finalists will be announced in mid-November.
