The 2nd BTC Francistown Marathon was officially opened by Vice President of the Republic of Botswana, His Honour Slumber Tsogwane accompanied by Minister of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture Hon. Tumiso Rakgare, His Worship the Mayor of Francistown, Hon. Godisang Radisigo and BTC Managing Director Anthony Masunga.

BTC announces the second annual BTC Francistown marathon

BTC held a press conference to announce and unveil the 2nd annual BTC Foundation Marathon to be held on the 23rd April 2023 at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium under the theme “ ”. BTC’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme which is run through the BTC Foundation is one of the many ways BTC has cemented its place as a company that advocates for and supports community upliftment projects.

The BTC Francistown Marathon is an annual event that is targeted at local and international athletes, with a special 5-kilometre peace run category for children. The distance categories are 42km, 21km, 10km and 5km and each category carries a wide array of prizes for top performing athletes.

The Deputy Mayor of the city of Francistown, His Worship Lesego Kwambala stated that he is happy about BTC bringing the Marathon to the city. He stated that all stakeholders in Francistown must support the Marathon in order for it to be sustainable. He applauded BTC for the initiative, stating that the marathon will be a great boost to the economy of Francistown.

Speaking on the theme of the BTC Francistown Marathon, BTC Head of Brand Management Thabo Modise stated that the theme speaks to being “connected with our health while having fun and networking”. Mr Modise stated that through the BTC Francistown Marathon, the Foundation seeks to provide a platform that offers opportunities for both commercial and social mileage for host communities, thus boosting the economy of the city of Francistown. “This marathon will bring a positive impact not only for retailers but for the small-scale retailers in the streets of Francistown” he said.
He stated that “through the BTC Francistown Marathon, the city of Francistown will be given an opportunity to showcase its capabilities of hosting not only locals, but international athletes and participants who will take part in the marathon”. He added that through the marathon, BTC will maintain, promote and support community upliftment projects throughout Botswana by partnering with stakeholders for long-term sustainable projects. He concluded by stating that all profits made from the BTC Francistown Marathon will be donated to charitable organisations in greater Francistown area and northeast region.

BTC also announced its collaboration with the local athletics club namely Francistown Athletics Club (FAC) and that they will collaborate with the local leadership and business communities for the successful implementation of the project. “BTC offers a platform that may be used by all to drive developments in the area and we therefore came up with an all-inclusive initiative to take place in the second city of Botswana”, said BTC Head of SME – North when he delivered the closing remarks. He added that BTC demonstrated this point by partnering with Francistown Athletics club and having a children’s category in the marathon. He concluded by adding that the BTC Francistown Marathon will be used to unearth talent while advocating for having fun, good health and promoting athletics while making it all-inclusive for Batswana.

Registrations for the marathon will open from Monday 13th February 2023 and athletes may register and pay through BTC Smega, by the nearest BTC store and through online payments at www.protime.co.bw Participants may forward any inquires to [email protected] if they need further clarity or assistance on the 2nd BTC Francistown Marathon.
