TEAM MANAGMENT with Mmalephontsha Lebo Oitebetse

As invested in athletics as different stake holders, be it sports governing organizations, athletes parents as well as supporters and the national at large, we take interest in the welfare of our teams especially when they have to go and compete in a competitions and arrangements have to be made. UBAC TRACK took the opportunity to catch up with Mmalephontsha Lebo Oitebetse, who has been a member of the BOTSWANA ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE, and also Team Manager to the National teams that travelled to Bahamas for WORLD RELAYS, WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in CHINA and the COMMONWEALTH GAMES which the teams did exceptionally well wining some medals in some of the competitions. UBAC TRACK wanted to know the role of a Team manager and how key are they to a team going for competition such as the World relays schedules for this weekend (1st and 2nd MAY 2021) in POLAND.

Ms Mmalephontsha Lebo Oitebetse had this to say. The role of a TEAM MANAGER can be diverse but should not be difficult or over complicated. She reveals there key elements a team manager must portray and one important one is to know the coach is in charge of team/athletes hence a good relationship must be established and there should be mutual consent between the coach and team manager. This will ensure that set tusks are will labels to who is responsibly for what thus creating a productive environment.

As a team manager you good communication and organizational skills are key in manager a team. The athletes' interest must come above self interests for good performance and results. Ms Oitebetse continues to add that as a team manager you need to have a team list of all athletes and support personal that is team psychologist, physiotherapist, team media personnel etc, with all their necessary information at your disposal at all times. Team managers must support the coach accordingly as well as making sure support staff is also adequately resourced and informed. As team manager you should organize all training equipment needed for training and competition, coordinate all transport arrangements for the team for all events that are concerned with the team, includes training venue competition venues medical/physiotherapy facilities and others and advice accordingly. There should be flow of communication to insure that athletes coaches are aware of all arrangements that concern the above mentioned. This will in turn give everyone ample time to prepare for themselves for what ever event is scheduled.
The team manager is responsibly for allocating team uniforms and kits to all members of the team and make sure that dress cote is adhered to at all times for different proceedings such as media conference, medal awarding and other functions. A good team manager should be transparent in matters that affect the athletes for instance inform what they are being provided with and what they are not being provided so that athletes can be prepared and have their own equipment where necessary.

When traveling abroad the team manager is responsibility for the team and should provided the team with a pre-travel orientation as many challenges may arise while traveling and member of the team need to be aware of such issues. The team must be aware of conditions that arise from change of locality, weather climate and sometimes cultural difference. Acquiring as much information as possible is very important, for instance something as simple as knowing what kind of sockets are used where a team will be camped in a different country can be very helpful. The team must be enlightened of rules and regulations, code of conduct to all team members include support staff.
Another key responsibility of a team manager is that, they need to be up to date with all information affecting the team, this can be changes in schedules, results, entry to respective athletes' event. This requires the team manager to well organized to get information from TECHNICAL INFORMATION CENTER (TIC) during competition and also have technical information relating to the team they are managing. Any new information should be channeled to the team as swiftly as possible. As Team manager you should align yourself with a rules and regulations on how to lodge a protest if the need be and you work well in the parameters of those rules, so being a team manager is not a vacation but requires one to be hands on almost all the time. All information must be relayed to respective persons, athletes, coaches, media.

Ms Oitebetse also highlighted other factors to be aware of as a team manager. Their are Coach-athlete requirements which one needs to be aware and respected. A coach may want to have a moment with the team alone, or perhaps give athletes time alone after any talk or pre-race talks. The team manager must be aware of such requirements of the coach and insure they are not violated by them or anyone else. Athletes also have requirements and the team manager must make sure they are adhered to were appropriate. Some athletes may require strapping, massage, or even lone time to premeditate their race. As such a good team manager should be away and insure such requirements are appropriately met. Team managers must follow up on all injuries. before during and after the competition and make sure that athletes are attended to accordingly and that all respective stakeholders are notified to keep track or athletes progress and state. As team manager you need to be well informed of your team. Their current state, performance history and any information relevant that when asked by media or competition technical office you can communicate without hesitation. This also can iron out any negative influence that may come external and disrupt the state of any member of the team.
Another responsibility very key of a team manager to to provide TLC to the players. At times the coach can not always provide such due to overwhelming technical duties. A team manager can be required to play a parent role especially to junior athletes where they may feel that have performed below standard. You should adjudicate disputes within the team. be well informed about polices such as child protection policy, harassment protection etc.

There are unscripted challenges that can occur and Ms Oitebetse states that strong personal and oral communications are very important. She sited two incidents where she had to go beyond to make sure athlete are assisted. One where upon joining the team in China an ISAAC MAKWAKA's VISA required to be renewed. This required her to go to the Chinese Embassy for assistance where say language barrier made it not so easy finding her self using sign languge. Another incedent was when Amantle Montsho changed her surname and at the World Relays they recognized the former. she had to get all papers in order which requiring communication with respective offices back home.

Ms Oitebetse conclude to say being a team manager is not an opportunity for a vacation, self interest must be put aside. establishing good relations, communication skills and transparncy with the team and most importantly make sure the teams interest are put first above anything else especially the athletes is a good recipe for good performance and bring medals as she has done bring medals from the World relays and Commonwealth Games.

With that we hope our team have traveled well and all is arranged accordingly as we expect a good showdown by team Botswana at this years Word relays.
