Here is some information about the differences between physiotherapy and massage (something we get asked about when people haven't been for physiotherapy before):

They are both forms of treatment aimed at improving a person's physical well-being, but they have distinct differences:

1. Purpose and Scope:
* Physiotherapy: Focuses on restoring movement and function to the body, typically after injury, illness, or surgery. It involves assessing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of conditions affecting mainly the musculoskeletal and neurological systems.

* Massage Therapy: Primarily focuses on massage of soft tissues of the body (muscles, tendons, ligaments) to improve circulation, relieve muscle tension, and promote relaxation. While it can address certain musculoskeletal issues, it typically does not involve comprehensive rehabilitation like physiotherapy.

2. Treatment Techniques:
* Physiotherapy: Involves a variety of techniques such as exercise prescription, manual therapy (joint mobilization, manip**ation), electrotherapy (ultrasound, TENS), and education on posture and movement.

* Massage Therapy: Utilises hands-on techniques like stroking, kneading, and applying pressure to massage soft tissues. Techniques vary widely, including Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, and sports massage.

In summary, while both physiotherapy and massage therapy aim to improve physical well-being, physiotherapy is more comprehensive in its approach, focusing on rehabilitation and functional improvement, whereas massage therapy primarily targets soft tissue massage for relaxation and relief of tension.

* For medical aid clients all you need is a Drโ€™s referral. The Drโ€™s referral lasts 3 months from given date. We accept Bomaid, Bpomas, P**a and Botsogo clients.

* Cash clients just walk in and book your appointment no Dr referral needed.

At the end of last week we covered recent concerns in regards to back pain but did you know technology can have just as much negativity on your neck as well? This picture illustrates the amount of pressure passed through your neck depending on the angle you are looking at your device ๐Ÿ“ฒ. The animals relate to the weight at the different angles. The increasing angle puts significant pressure on all the structures which stabilise your neck including the muscles, tendons, ligaments and bones ๐Ÿ™‚.

It is very important to make sure you adopt a good position while using your handheld device to prevent any long-term injury to your neck and the surrounding structures. If you have some concerns in relation to this think about your position and how long you may spend in this position at one time. Remember you should be moving regularly (at least hourly) and try a different position ie lying on your front or sitting at the table.

Posts to follow will highlight some easy exercises you can do which may alleviate any issues you have in relation to this but if your concerns continue then please pick up the phone โ˜Ž๏ธ and contact us either through the Advice Line or by any of our physio dept numbers.
