The Barrier Reef is a series of coral reefs straddling the coast of Belize, roughly 300 meters (980 ft) offshore in the north and 40 kilometers (25 mi) in the south within the country limits. The Belize Barrier Reef is a 300-kilometer (190 mi) long section of the 900-kilometer (560 mi) Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, which is continuous from Cancún on the north-eastern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula through the Riviera Maya and down to Honduras, making it the second largest coral reef system in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in .

𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝘆𝗲 , Belize's largest , is known for its water sports, scuba diving and Caribbean beaches. Off the eastern shore, the Barrier Reef features famed snorkeling and dive sites such as the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, with an abundance of life, and the 124m-deep . The town of San Pedro is the island's gateway and center for sailing and reef exploration.

All these geographical features provide the perfect habitat for marine life and fishing.

🚢 The 100 meter long, 4766 dwt container ship Paranga ran aground near English Caye Channel, Belize. The Paranga was en route to Kingston, Jaimaica from Belize when the crew made a navigational error and struck a reef. The container ship suffered minimal damage. No reports of injuries to the 13 crew on board and no pollution was spotted. The crew contacted the Coast Guard who dispatched a response team to the scene. @ Lighthouse Reef Atoll, Belize

Butterfly Falls is located inside the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in Belize's western Cayo District. Although it is inside the public nature reserve, the falls themselves are located on private property operated by the 🇧🇿
