COSECHA Y POSCOSECHA DE MARACUYÁ

Los frutos alcanzan su madurez entre los 50-60 días después de la antesis (7-8 meses después de la siembra), en este punto alcanza su máximo peso (130 g), rendimiento de jugo (36%) y contenido de sólidos solubles (13-18º Brix), este momento se identifica externamente por tomar una coloración verde amarillenta, 20 días después de alcanzar este punto el fruto cae y comienza la senescencia disminuyendo su peso, acidez y azucares totales.

Los rendimientos por manzana son de 20 ton/ha pudiendo alcanzar hasta las 30, y en términos prácticos una planta puede producir entre 1 y 2 frutos diarios en la temporada de mayor producción.

La cosecha consiste en colectar de la planta los frutos amarillos cuando se destinan para el mercado fresco y para la industria se destinan los que se recolectan del suelo. Los frutos para mercado fresco se cortan con el pecíolo de una longitud de 1-2 cm. para evitar la deshidratación del fruto y la posible entrada de hongos post-cosecha.

Los frutos se colocan en javas, ya que si se colocan en sacos el pedúnculo se cae, y se llevan a pilas para lavarlos en una solución clorada (100 ppm) y el pecíolo se recorta dejándolo de 0.5 cm de longitud.

Pet owners advised to watch out for poisonous toads Now that the rainy season is upon us, pet owners, particularly those who own dogs, are advised to watch out for cane toads, an invasive species of toads that secrete a toxic substance that can be fatal to animals.

For the past couple weeks our daily temperature has been an average of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.7 C). Temperatures this high can have a devastating effect on the well-being of our animals and can lead to a serious health risk: heatstroke.

This condition also referred to as heat stress, heat exhaustion or hyperthermia can be potentially deadly to our pets, so it’s essential for us to know how to prevent heatstroke.

How do pets get heatstroke? Well, there are several key factors that can lead to it occurring:

* Being exposed to a hot, humid environment without access to adequate ventilation.
* Inadequate shade
* Insufficient drinking water
* Excessive exercise, particularly during the hottest parts of the day

Heat stroke occurs when your pet’s internal temperature becomes dangerously high, generally about 106 degrees F.
It can lead to a cascade of very serious conditions that can result in brain damage, organ failure, and death. A chemical reaction occurs and actually breaks down the cells in your pet’s body.

The symptoms of heat stroke in dogs increase in severity the longer a dog goes without treatment and the longer they are exposed to dangerous conditions.

A few of the signs of heat stroke in dogs:

* Body temperature that reach 104-110 degrees Fahrenheit
* Heavy panting
* Rapid pulse or heartbeat
* Bright or dark red gums & tongue
* Excessive thirst
* Excessive drooling
* Lethargy
* Lack of coordination, staggering
* Seizures
* Glazed eyes
* Bloody diarrhea
* Vomiting
* Unconsciousness

On hot, humid days, like almost every day recently, keep your pets indoors, if that’s a possibility . If they must be outside, provide plenty of shade and fresh water. Make sure that your pet can’t spill the water source, or use several bowls in different places.
Add ice cubes to the water bowl to keep water cooler longer. Let your pet play in a cool water “bath” or a kiddie pool. Plan ahead and make sure the shade will still be available as the sun changes.
Never leave a pet unattended in a parked car or chained to one spot even for “just a minute.”

Limit outdoor activity to the early morning and late evening, when temperatures are somewhat lower. Carry water with you when walking your dog.
Notice any heavy panting, loss of energy, weakness, stumbling, or any of the signs listed above. If things don’t improve quickly, take your pet to your vet.
