Bakerview Music Academy
Free El Sistema Style Music Education We believe that music is of great benefit to young people, improving academics, self-discipline and social skills.
At the heart of El Sistema is a simple idea: using the classical music ensemble experience to promote positive social change in youth. Our program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays in space we rent from the Bakerview Mennonite Brethren Church. Our goal is to make high quality music instruction accessible to children from families who are economically challenged. Register for our annual Choose Joy Walkathon here: https://go.dojiggy.io/c59c1d
Thank you to the wonderful staff for letting us share our walkathon poster on your community bulletin board. Our families and teaching artists will be walking at Mill Lake tomorrow afternoon. Thank you to everyone who has donated to support social change through music!
Support our walkathon this Saturday by walking with us, or supporting our students with a pledge. ❤️Together, we can make social change through music! Every donation helps provide professional music instruction to Abbotsford youth, regardless of their family’s socioeconomic status. Studies show that studying music helps youth perform better academically and socially. Playing music is healing and provides important skills such as focus, confidence, and teamwork.
Look at the focus and determination of this trio of young cellists. ❤️
It’s getting busy here at Bakerview Music Academy! We welcomed our students back to after-school lessons the second week of September, and this weekend our families will be participating in our fundraising walkathon. Our theme for this year’s walkathon is Walk with Music & Gratitude. We’re going to walk (or run or cycle) 5 km around Mill Lake Park this Saturday from 2-4 pm. We’ll be meeting at picnic shelter #3, which is accessed via Emerson Street (not too far from the water park). Come join us - or pledge your support with a donation (information here: https://bakerviewmusic.ca/event/support-our-sept-21-walkathon-how-to-participate-or-donate/) to our students and our mission of making social change through music.
Out of this world indeed!
🚀🎶 We’re excited to present an out-of-this-world performance (literally!) featuring astronaut Sarah Gillis playing her violin FROM SPACE on the Polaris Dawn mission. Especially exciting: She is joined in performance by ESUSA music students and our international El Sistema partners around the world!

Please remember to bring water bottles to music academy (labelled with your name!).

First week back: Completed! We had so much fun meeting our new students, catching up with returning students, welcoming new teaching artists and volunteers, and making music together!
Can you read this message? Our BMA Juniors figured out what Mrs. Jenn was telling them!
First day of 2024-2025 academy? Check!
It feels so good to be learning and making music together again!
Today’s the day: We are back to music academy for our eleventh year! We cannot wait to welcome our new and returning students today after school. See you soon! Senior students should have their instruments with them.
Our administrator and program director have had some great conversations with college students about volunteer opportunities at our nonprofit. We’re looking for classroom assistants to mentor youth grades two to 12.
We’re looking for volunteers to help as classroom assistants. Today Ms Heidi & Ms Karen are at for their volunteer fair. Drop by and say hello if you’re here!
Can you help us? We are hoping that someone in the Lower Mainland has a youth-sized double bass that has been left unplayed, gathering dust. We have students who would love to play. If you can help, please send us a PM or contact us via our website.
Our teaching artists and staff met today to finish preparations for the return to music academy next Tuesday. We are ready to welcome more than 60 students to BMA next week! And since it’s Thankful Thursday, we want to acknowledge the generous support our Sistema music academy receives from ❤️. You help us create social change through music. We could not do what we do without you.
We’re so excited! There’s just one more week until we start back to music academy. Our staff and teaching artists are getting ready to welcome our returning students and several new students. If you’re on our waitlist, you will have received an email (check your spam folder); we will let you know if any spots open in September or January.
Ms Jayne helped with the inventory of our violins last week, proving her patience because with Mr. Chris & Mr. Rafael together, there are always shenanigans!!
🙃🤪😏
Violins inspected so that any minor repairs can be made. Check! ✅ These ones all passed inspection by our violin teaching artist, Mr. Chris.
Look at all the violin cases! We’re busy getting ready for music academy to start the week after public school starts. Our administrator and some teaching artists were in Thursday to tidy and inventory. Mr Rafael came to help, which was very nice of him. He was checking over cases to make sure they’re in good shape for our young musicians. We wish him all the best in his studies at university!

Who else enjoyed the beautiful music by at Mill Lake last night? The park was full! What a great turnout.
Tonight!! Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy some beautiful music.
Did you know that Calvin Dyck was instrumental (pun intended!) in founding our Sistema music academy to create social change in Abbotsford?
Don’t miss his youth orchestra tonight. It’s always a great show.
Artistic collaboration happens behind the scenes as well as on the stage! Our nonprofit Sistema academy is happy to loan 40 music stands to Calvin Dyck, who is conducting Symphony in the Park **tonight** from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Mill Lake Park. Bring your lawn chairs to the Bevan Avenue entrance and get ready to enjoy tonight in the great outdoors.
Tonight is our Bakerview Music Academy Society’s Annual General Meeting on Zoom at 7 pm. Message us if you’d like the link to join the videoconference. The board will update everyone on our busy 2023-2024 year, and talk about what’s ahead for 2024-2025.
Look, Fugue, Rhapsody, and Minuet students! This fiddler crab spotted in La Conner, Washington, is playing his fiddle. When was the last time you practiced your violin or cello? Get out there in the sunshine and play some tunes! Be like the fiddler crab!
At our staff planning and development day the other week, we got to see our assistant teaching artist Rafael one more time before he goes to university to study music in Ottawa this fall. He got a commemorative collage of our team to take with him!
❤️🎶❤️
Big shout out to my newest top fans! 💎
Marie Doerksen, Tinas Quest, Percival Andal! We are so grateful to have your cheers and support!
Waych worthy!! ❤️
We gave this collage to Mr. Robertson at our staff planning day last week. He is retiring, and while we’re happy for him and his family, we’re sure going to miss him. ❤️
