A huge thank you to Connor for stopping by today and helping get some lights up for the animals!! These would have been a pain in the butt to do alone!! Also thank you to Buckerfields in Abbotsford for the great deals as always on our lights/fixtures!
Today geckos are one of the angriest, defensive and bitiest reptiles out there but...we really want a friendly one!! Only time will tell if we can get this beautiful lizard to calm down. I think we are doing great so far!
Raina is now officially our chinchilla trainer! Yeah, it may be completely unnecessary but, shes having fun!
Conservation showed up today to see our newest rescue and good news! She said we can keep the carpet python until at least next Friday for it's next vet appointment!
We took that Giant carpet python to the vet today. Not terrible news but still have to do more testing to get some answers. Thank you to everyone at Townline veterinary hospital in Abbotsford for getting us in so quickly!!
Rescue/surrender #67 for 2024.
This HUGE carpet python was surrendered yesterday and is actually over the legal length allowed in BC! Any snakes over 3 meters (about 9'10") requires a permit which we do not have. This beauty is 10'10"!! We will most likely not be applying for a permit due to the fact that this is considered a dangerous snake now because of a size and we would not be allowed to have anyone in our building with that snake being in there, even with a permit... She is about 16 years old and was surrendered to do some medical issues she is having. You can see in the pictures there is a large mass growing under her skin. We are heading to the vet this morning at 10:15 as we got permission from conservation to do so since it is actually illegal to transport the snake without a permit! Conservation officers will they be coming this afternoon to take a look at the snake and determining what to do from there.
We were very excited about the size of our newest rescue until we discovered that is is actually too big and actually illegal!! We are working with conservation who are being very nice and helpful by letting us get this snake to the vet tomorrow even though we do not have the required permits! We will keep you posted with this snakes situation both medically and legally!
Rescue/surrender #66 for 2024.
This is Medusa, a very thin ball python. She was surrendered due to her owner moving and we are not sure if her age. It may be hard to tell from the pictures but her skin is literally folding over itself from the lack of muscle. Often when snakes are transported and moved to a new home they take a few days to settle in and begin feeding. This one took food from my hand while I was holding it as soon as it came in. It was VERY hungry..
Here's 2 1/2 minutes of chinchillas and their dust bath to end your day :)
Here are some before and afters of that poor leopard gecko that was surrendered a few days ago. It took a LOT of soaking to get that shedding off without doing more damage to the toes. It looks like she may still lose a couple but it could have been way worse if her previous owners waited much longer... If you have a pet, please pay attention to it so that you know if/when it needs medical care before it gets to this point.
Rescue/surrender #65 for 2024.
This little Russian tortoise was found roaming the streets in Abbotsford for a brief but most likely fun time after he escaped his outdoor pen. Sadly for him, his journey ended quickly when he was found, brought to us and then quickly reunited with his very happy family. We will NEVER get upset or punish someone who simply lost their pet while trying to give it the best life possible. People lose their dogs and cats all the time so why would this be any different :)
**Update** Franklin has now been reunited with his family!
Do you know someone who's missing a very cute little tortoise?? This one was just found this evening and we are hoping his owner is looking for him!
Rescue/surrender #64 for 2024.
This beautiful ball python was surrendered today. His name is Artie and he is about 5 years old. His teenage owner had lost interest in him which is very common. These snakes can live up to and over 30 years so it is a very big commitment!
Rescue/surrender #63 for 2024.
This poor leopard gecko was surrendered today. You can see the VERY stuck shedding on her toes that really needs to come off as it is killing the toes. Her owners also said that she has been keeping her eyes closed lately and that is because, if you look really close in the picture, you can see some retained shed in her eye as well. This is very common when these geckos are not given the proper conditions / humidity. This is such a simple fix and can be prevented so easily if people just did their research. We were hoping that these people would have taken the gecko to the vet when we explained what was going on but they didn't and decided to bring her to us instead.. she is now soaking overnight and hopefully won't lose too many of her toes :-(
Rescue/surrender #62 and 63 for 2024.
This is Mellow (whiter one) and Primo (grey one). These sugar gliders are brothers and almost 3 years old. They were surrendered because their owners no longer had time for them. Sugar gliders are a LOT of work and a VERY big commitment which is why we never recommend them as pets.
Between the dump runs and the trailer rental we are at just about $1000 in the last 2 days as we near the end of this giant project. If you'd like to make a donation to help us recover the tens of thousands we have spent building out new rescue, they can be made via email transfer or PayPal to [email protected]
Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support!
Some great progress with Blue the macaw that was surrendered a few days ago. She actually stepped up to me which was amazing since she gets scared every time I walk close to her enclosure!! Hopefully soon these lovely ladies can be living together :)
A couple of fat little surrenders came in today with VERY sharp claws!! No, these are not available for adoption at this time.
Rescue/surrenders # 60 & 61 for 2024.
The first picture is Aphrodite and she is about 6-7 years old. She is pretty small for her age and a little underweight so we will work on correcting that asap. The second (darker one) is Zeus and he is about 7-8 years. We aren't really sure why there were surrendered as their previous owner just said that "I've had them in my apartment for over 4 years". Please keep in mind that when you purchase or adopt a snake, you are committing to an animal that can live 30 years or more!
I guess we should do a demo progress video since we did so many of building the new place. A lot for mixed feelings tearing this place apart but it will be better in the end! We are looking for some volunteers this Wed, Thurs and Fri that don't mind getting their hands dirty to help with getting this place all cleared out. If you can help, send us a msg!
Raina is absolutely loving the new walk-in chinchilla enclosure and so are the chinchillas!!
Our first power outage in the new place just happened to be on the hottest day we've had this year! Luckily we were there and got the generator going quickly. We REALLY need a fancy system that will automatically turn on when the power goes out but that is a LOT of money!! If anyone would like to buy that for us please let us know! LOL
I have a lot of proud daddy moments with Raina but this one was amazing! We haven't even had this bird for 2 days and I can't get near her without her freaking out or trying to kill me. Raina spent less than an hour trying to earn her trust and she did it!! She was so patient and determined and now she has a new best friend at the greenhouse! This kid is amazing!
While most people were complaining about the heat today, Cybill the rhino iguana was just loving it at our display during Berry Fest in Abbotsford!
Rescue/surrender #59 for 2024.
This chahoua gecko is about 2.5 years old and was surrendered yesterday. He has a bit of a deformed spine near his back legs but it doesnt seem to effect his mobility at all. We have never had one of these amazing geckos before so we are pretty happy about this one!
Rescue/surrender #58 for 2024.
This is "Blue" the blue and gold macaw and she is around 28 years old. Her owner has recently lost her job and she was no longer able to care for this beautiful bird. As you can see, she has plucked herself pretty bad at one point in her life. The feathers will not grow back but we will still love her! Hopefully Blue, Buster and Tia can all love together one day.
Meet our newest surrender. Hopefully Blue will settle in and be able to have the company of Buster and Tia in the future!
Treat day for the red foot tortoises and the giant bunch of grass for the sulcatas! I do apologize for the terrible sound quality. The big fans are on to help keep the greenhouse a decent temperature :)
Rescue/surrender #56 & 57 for 2024.
These two beautiful little tarantulas were surrendered due to their owner moving and not being able to have them in the new house. We posted a video showing how fast and jumpy they are but they are otherwise very nice little tarantulas!
We are looking for some volunteers to help us out at our booth at Berry fest this Saturday in Abbotsford! Your job will be to help teach people about our rescue, our animals and help people pet/hold our animals while having a great time! We are there from 12:00 p.m. till 8:00 p.m. I would prefer if people can do minimum for hour shifts. If you can help, send us a message!
