John and I are back in the studio today, Tuesday Sept 5, for another season of the DeLongJohn Blues R***e airing from 2-4pm PDST. If I post the station and it’s frequency, FB won’t allow the post, so just type University of the Fraser Valley Radio Station and it will come up. If you can’t listen live, our podcasts can be accessed anytime by clicking on “schedule.”. Got some great blues for you and most of it is new releases. There’s 8 artists never heard before on our show, including Canadian Garnetta Cromwell as well as Canadian Sean Poluk who this week is sitting at number one on the Canadian Roots Music Report charts. Also from Canada , you will hear our “Ice Queen” Sue Foley, Brandon Isaak with a pre-release from his new album due out Sept 22, the Bluesland Horn Band and a rousing gospel from Debra Power.
Our compare the same song begins with the 1941 original from Big Maceo Merriweather with Tampa Red, followed by the June released cover from Mitch Woods and featuring Joe Louis Walker on guitar.
We’ve got a very powerful American lineup that includes Ally Venable, the Nick Moss Band featuring Dennis Gruenling, Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia, Monster Mike Welch, Bob Corritore featuring Koko Taylor, Paul Boddy and the Slidewinder Blues Band, Nalani Rothrock, Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones, Mike Bourne Band featuring Johnny Burgin, and we have the Pacific Northwest’s Joel Astley, with a double shot from his Aug 18 released album which is currently number one on the US Roots Music Report Blues charts.
For the first time ever, we have blues from Poland with the Boogie Boys.
We hope you can tune in live or on podcast at your leisure and have a great Tuesday and a wonderful week!

Welcoming Leonard Podolak to our 36th Annual festival!

Founder and band leader of The Duhks, Leonard Podolak is a foremost innovator and folk music contributor, with musical experiences worldwide that form the backbone of his repertoire. Leonard has shared styles of music from the string traditions of Appalachia, Ireland, Scotland, England, Quebec, and Louisiana, while bringing in influences of Gospel, Blues, Rock, Afro-Cuban, and African traditions. His unique style of clawhammer banjo makes a place for the five-string in all of these traditions, based off of the Appalachian clawhammer technique. He loves playing jigs and reels but if there’s a Cajun song he plays his banjo like a triangle. If it’s an Irish tune, he plays it like a tenor banjo. And a rock song, a screaming electric guitar (in his mind anyway)!
A Grammy and Juno award winner, along with many nominations under his belt, the biggest accolade came from his hero Doc Watson, who once told him at MerleFest, that his banjo playing on the first Duhks CD, “Your Daughters And Your Sons”, was as fine a clawhammer pickin’ as he’d ever heard!
