I have actually had this finished for about a week, but I've been slow posting it. An Orangutang. It was going to be a Gorilla, but then I had a request for an orangutang.

I have been asked many times why I give my carvings to children for free. The short answer is because you can't put a price on a child's happiness, it's priceless. The longer answer is, I give brave children carvings. Bravery in children looks a lot different than bravery in adults. A child that stands against their peers in order to do the right thing, that is incredibly brave for a young child or teenager. The emotional and social risks are great.
There are awards for adults who do brave things, but there aren't awards for children. I use my carvings as awards, encouragement to continue to stand up against adversity in order to do the right thing. It's my way of saying "hey you, you're not alone, I see you"
If people want to buy my carvings, I won't turn them down, money is tight, but I'm also not going to stop spreading happiness one child at a time just because money is tight.
Carving is my hobby, not my livelihood.

Standing Bear

Can you guess what this one will be?

Ready for final sanding and polishing tomorrow. First photo shows the progression after the rough out stage. second photo shows separation of legs and rounding out. Third photo shows carving of ears, muzzle, and muscle structure.

Tomorrow I will polish and wax the new carving.
The following photos show rounding off flat areas, and the final sanding with a sanding sponge, which I do just before I start sanding with the polishing grits.

Well, it's coming along. Slowly but surely. Going slowly because the thickness of the stone. I started with a 6x6x6 block. Then I cut 2 inch slices off the block to form 6x6x2 pieces. Then I draw my pattern on. Then I start carving.

I finely got some stone delivered. I was starting to go through stone withdrawal. Starting on the first of 3 trophy toppers. Top Explosive dog, Top Overall Labrador, Top Overall Shepherd.

I won't be accepting any custom orders for a few months. I'm carving a trophy topper for the Canadian Police Canine Association's National Championships.

I don't like putting up much personal stuff, however, 2 weeks ago I had emergency surgery. It has set my carvings back by a month. I'm not allowed to lift anything that weighs over 5 lbs and that rules out even the small blocks of stone. I do have a small slice of left over stone that I'm going to try and work on. You can look forward to a Hippo in the same colour stone as the Kestral.
