Raise your hands if you have tried or done a thing you knew wasn’t good for you, but out of desperation, you did it away with fingers and toes crossed praying for the outcome to be in your favour.
I’d be lying if I said I never made a bad skin decision out of desperation. Like the time one of the cousins went to camp and returned with something that resembled wing worm and passed it on. We were taken to the Derm with no resolve. And so, lol, i had the brilliant idea of dabbing the infected areas with undiluted Dettol!!! If you know dettol, and how strong of an antiseptic it is, you know it burnt my skin and left marks on my thighs.
I was young and uneducated on the dangers of certain ingredients on the skin. I had the right idea, which was to kill the bacteria or germs lol, but, I didn’t take into consideration how my decision would cause further damage and insecurities leading me to hide my legs for years.
We hear these stories of desperation all the time, and I’d like you know that you don’t ever have to feel ashamed for the route you took because you believed you’d achieve the results you were seeking.
We also would like you to know that all is not lost, your skin, your confidence, your self esteem, your dream of walking into a room without feeling judged can be restored.
See you on Sunday!!!
POLISHED is more than skin experts sitting on a stage talking about their opinions.
It’s an event designed to help you overcome your fears, concerns and confusion when it comes to your skin and overall wellbeing as a woman of colour.
The industry is noisy and it can be hard to figure out what is true and what’s just great marketing.
We know how important the appearance of your skin can be to your self esteem, financial independence and the way you show up in the world every day.
This event goes beyond the products and services you are being sold everyday.
We are shifting perspectives and helping you to think differently about industry norms.
See you on Sunday at the industry’s only event dedicated to serving YOU !

Hiding my cross bite (biggest insecurity)
Like many of you, I’ve lived with insecurities and feelings of not being good enough. Growing up in two worlds was confusing. I often state that because I was born at the dead end of the year and month, God didn’t have much left for me 🤦🏾♀️. He said, “my child, go forth with this little bit of everything and be great” 😂. Growing up West Indian, being skinny was just the same as being “fat”. skinny is seen as unhealthy. You need more porridge, you need more dumplings, maybe a wash out because you may have tape worms lol. People also assumed i didn’t much, which was quite the opposite. But living in Canada and stepping outside of my community, my body was considered “perfect”and modelesque. “You have a nice body”, they’d say, or, “you have nice legs”.. And in my head I thought something was wrong with them for saying such a thing. Because, in my world mawga, lanky, flat chest and no b***y wasn’t the ideal body type. Now, add Jhery curls and cross bites, with a dash of left over dark spots and scars from chicken pox to the picture and, you can sum up my childhood-teenage years.
Now as a big woman, with 2 children, I have filled out a bit and I love it!! At 30, I got braces to straighten my crooked smile. I enjoy my curls to the max and love that I can wear my hair straight for a few days when I want. However; some insecurities still lingers and prevents me from being exactly who i wish to be, which is to be a bit more free in expressing myself. I still find myself saying no to certain things out of fear of what one might think or say.
I shared all of this to say, there were some truths about myself (my genetics) that I couldn’t change no matter how much I ate. I had to accept that I was a bonafide mawga gyal and worked with it. The things that were fixable, I fixed, for I knew they’d help me feel more confident in how I present myself in this world.
We are all a work in progress.
Having the ability to take care of women at their most vulnerable time in life is ….. humbling and a blessing.
I wish I had the courage to help take care of my younger cousin when she went through chemo and radiation years ago. Instead, I stayed away. My mind and body went into a whole different place. I saw what it did to others and I couldn’t handle seeing her like that, so I stayed away. Now, looking back, I don’t think that was the best approach. P.s. she gave Hodgkins the middle finger and is currently thriving 😎. And I think she knows I love her 🥰
The change in appearance, loss of hair, dry flaking skin, weight loss/gain, and all the other issues that are not visible to the human eye, unless shared is not only depressing to our clients, the sense of loss and mourning of the person they once were.
“Orica, I’d love to come in sometime this month for you to take care of me”. I smiled at the text.

Recap of a magical Saturday.
This past Saturday The O Spot was live inaugural wedding show.
It was an honour to have shared space with some of GTA’s elite entrepreneurs. The love and support showed for one another!!! *chills.
We were delighted to meet and share our skin knowledge with future brides/grooms and with anyone who cared to listen lol.
Our take away?
1. The O Spot’s presence was appreciated. The attendees were happy that we were there.
2. More people are aware of us than we think.
3. There is still a huge lack of awareness concerning what treatments are available to black skin and where to seek those treatments.
4. The connections that were made this event was the best part.
maybe I can have a skin session talk segment next year? 🤔

Back on the topic of trust.
Some people jump right in and others, we’ll, you have to warm them up.
Even though she loved my facials, she had her trusted beautician at Shoppers who would advise her on products to use for melasma. Over the year, I kept note of what little progress those products made and continue educating her on how melasma works and types of treatments needed.
Her daughter was about to take her “somewhere” to get it treated and so, when I was doing my content day, I asked if she would be willing to be my model and explained the process to her. Her daughter approved, because truth be told, she didn’t know a thing about the place she was taking her mom.
13 days after the treatment, she brought me a bottle of wine and would like to continue the process.
Before and after are 13 days apart.
1 session, 1 cold peel. Home care 7 days after treatment for 7 nights.
I was also impressed at how lifted and vibrant she looks.
Sometimes it takes gentle nudge.
“Helping you unlock possibilities you may have only dreamed of”.
Happy Aethetician Day!!! (Yesterday)
Today I’d like to share my skin transgressions with you. Getting transparent like Jada😝
I wasn’t always a good skin citizen.
Trust meeeee gorgeous. I have traveled some of the same unhealthy skin care routes that you have. As a matter of fact, couple nights ago I passed out on the couch in my makeup 🥴. I know, I know. One of the biggest skincare crimes… I’m going to jail mama 😭😭
I didn’t always know what was right for my skin and I would use whatever and when I say whatever, I MEAN WHATEVER!!!
From the lemon and lime to baking soda.
Toothepaste to cake soaps (blue bomber, dettol soap & carbolic.
Dabbing my skin raw dettol 🤦🏾♀️ desperate times.
Dabbing pimples with Vicks (skin ptsd).
I am surprised I still have the skin that I have. But that’s because I caught on in my 20’s and hopefully I have done enough to fix the atrocities I have committed against my skin in my earlier years.
Can you relate? Share your skincare blunders over the years.

I don’t wear sunscreen because I work indoors.
Ok, ok, but here me out.
Does your home/office have windows, allowing natural light to illuminate the space?
Do you have indoor plants that grow and thrive?
Besides daily or weekly watering, what’s the most important element plants need to survive?
Do you see where I am going?
UV passes through windows (75% of it), and so, even though you are indoors, you can be exposed to UV.
With that said. You should be wearing sunscreen indoors especially if you work in well lit ☀️ rooms.
Polished: Beyond the skin was Magical!
For years, I have been wrestling with the idea of this event. I knew there was a need for an event that focused on celebrating the uniqueness of skin of colour in the GTA, however, I lacked confidence in how the community would receive such an event and so, I sat on it.
The positive feedback from last year made me realize that my fear was holding me back from showing up for my community the way they needed me to.
Last Sunday still feels surreal. The room was filled with gorgeous women and men of varying shades, soaking up all the knowledge the panel had to share. The engagement between guests and panelists made it even that more impactful.
I have read and listened to your feedback and suggestions for next year and beyond. I am confident and ready to step into the roll as leader in delivering quality skincare events focusing on S.O.C in the GTA.
I would like to thank my panelists:
The day wouldn’t have gone the way it did without your knowledge and expertise.
for being super host and for moderating.
Last but not least, for pouring into our guest and leaving them full on love and appreciation. You turned the room into a runway of walking trophies. It was amazing to watch and there is truly nobody like us and so, whatever we deliver, it has to be delivered in ways our community understands. Thank you!
To my staff, Kimberley and Simone. You two are the BEST.
And a special thanks to my daughter, Nhyira and friend Zahra for being our beautiful greeters.
A huge thanks to for allowing us to use their space and to for transforming the space into exactly what I asked for.
We can’t forget our sponsors. This wouldn’t have been possible without your support, both financially and in-kind.
sincerely.photography
Love this Thursday at noon on our IG page .
Thanks to the for the recognition.
Hello Orica, On July 23rd, 2023, the Mirror Lounge Collective will be launching the inaugural edition of The Viola Awards, which honours beauty professionals who have used their platforms to promote social change. Named after trailblazer Viola Desmond, the Viola Awards is a grassroots movement that gives back to the community, celebrates diversity, champions inclusion, and promotes corporate wellness.
We are honored to tell you that you have been selected to receive a Changemaker award.
As you know, the beauty industry plays a fundamental role in how people are perceived and how they view themselves. At the same time, we must do better to reflect the diversity of its people at all levels. Unlike most of the events in our industry that focus on the beauty we create, the Viola Awards recognize and promote individuals who have used their voices and platforms to affect change in the industry, particularly in addressing the issue of inadequate diversity and representation.
The Viola Awards recognizes beauty professionals past and present who, through their careers and personal lives, have been changemakers for our industry - just like Viola Desmond.
