Lithium-ion batteries and the devices that contain them should not go in household garbage or recycling bins. They can cause fires in the home or landfill sites. Instead, lithium-ion batteries should be taken to separate recycling or household hazardous waste collection points.

Is plastic reduction part of your sustainability efforts?
Even if you are not fortunate enough to access a CSA farm, there are ways to limit plastic consumption when shopping for produce.
Avoid products that are wrapped in unnecessary plastic and invest in some reusable bags (or simply don't use a bag at all). If you can't avoid plastic packaging, try to think of creative ways to reuse (arts and crafts, anyone?) or ensure you recycle properly.

The Natural Asset Initiative has released “Nature is Infrastructure: How to Integrate Natural Assets in Asset Management Plans"" a progressive guide which outlines comprehensive best practices so that municipalities can effectively manage natural assets. Nature-based solutions can complement traditional “grey” engineered infrastructure and provide significant cost benefits while reducing growing risks to communities.
Supported by the Greenbelt Foundation and the Municipal Finance Officers’ Association of Ontario (MFOA), the guide details how local governments across Canada are taking steps to incorporate natural assets into their asset management processes, recognizing their crucial role in community infrastructure."

It's save-your-berry-and-stone-fruit-scraps season!
Make a refreshing, almost free, carbonated drink with fruit scraps. I freeze stones with bits of fruit attached, strawberry tops, fruit peels and even date pits in jars until I've amassed enough to make a batch of fruit scrap soda.
To make the drink, simply add the fruit scraps to a clean jar, add sugar and water, stir daily and wait. The bacteria and yeast on the fruit (and in the fruit) eat the sugars and emit gases and acids to create a sweet and sour bubbly drink.

Great move! Simcoe County is planning changes to its garbage collection, including refusing to pick up your garbage if you don’t also put out a compost bin. Organics in the landfill creates methane gas, 25x more potent than carbon dioxide. Please use your green bin.

Did you know that strawberries are at the top of EWG's Dirty Dozen list? 🍓
Despite being delicious, conventionally grown strawberries were found to have up to 23 pesticides on each sample in our 2024 Shoppers Guide research. Opt for organic strawberries when possible, but also remember that eating fresh produce (regardless of how they're grown) will always be better than ultra-processed snacks and junk food!
