Routes have been started for anyone wondering

02/17/2024

Don't put away those shovels just yet... Ready or not, more snow is headed towards parts of Southern Ontario this weekend! ⛄️

Residents in the typical snowbelt regions around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay will be busy digging out over the next few days as cold air triggers a multi-day snow squall event.

The areas targeted for heavy snowfall starting tonight and continuing into Sunday include Bruce County, Grey County, Huron County, Perth County, Simcoe County, Muskoka, and Parry Sound.

These regions could receive an additional 15 to 30cm of snow over the next two days, with local amounts reaching up to 50cm in some areas. It's important to remember that lake effect snow is highly localized, so not everyone will experience these significant snowfall totals.

Reports have already come in of 15-25cm of snow in the Barrie area since Thursday, courtesy of the system and subsequent lake effect snow. And there's still more on the way!

We are currently waiting for the latest data from this evening's model runs and will publish a detailed forecast in the upcoming hours. This way, you can be fully prepared for what the weekend has in store.

❄️ RADAR UPDATE

12:53 AM - Friday, Febuary 16, 2024

We're witnessing some organized lake effect activity off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, resulting in locally intense snowfall rates and reduced visibility in the affected regions.

The most intense squall extends from Port Elgin through Hanover and into Orangeville.

Additionally, some weaker squalls off Georgian Bay are impacting the Barrie, Wasaga Beach, and Collingwood areas.

This activity is expected to persist throughout the night and into the early morning hours of Friday. The latest models suggest potential snowfall accumulations of up to 15-20cm in parts of Bruce and Grey counties by the end of Friday.

What conditions are you experiencing in your area?

- Brennent

02/13/2024

Get ready, Southern Ontario - Winter is back! ❄️

As we highlighted a few days back, the possibility of accumulating snow across Southern Ontario this Thursday remains very much in play.

Current forecasts suggest we might receive between 10-20cm of snow starting Thursday afternoon and lasting into Friday. Central and Eastern Ontario are expected to be the most impacted regions, though parts of the Greater Toronto Area could also experience significant snowfall.

This weather system will involve a mix of precipitation, introducing some uncertainty regarding the exact snowfall amounts for those in Deep Southwestern Ontario and along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

We are currently in the process of finalizing a preliminary forecast, which we plan to share later today.

Are you prepared for the return of the snow? ⛄️

Timing: Ending this evening.

6:25a SNOW SQUALL WATCH ISSUED by Environment Canada

DATE: Saturday, January 13, 2024

(Locations listed below description)

Multi-day lake effect snow squall event expected beginning this evening.

Hazards: Locally heavy snowfall with total accumulations of 20 to 40 cm by Monday evening. Peak snowfall rates of 3 to 5 cm per hour. Significantly reduced visibility at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Timing: This evening through at least Monday evening.

Discussion: Lake effect snow squalls will continue through at least Monday, and likely into Tuesday as strong westerly winds bring much cooler air to the Region.

Significantly reduced visibility at times in heavy snow and blowing snow can be expected resulting in difficult travel conditions.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

⚠️ WINTER STORM WARNING ISSUED

Environment Canada has expanded the Winter Storm Warning to include the GTA and along the Lake Ontario shoreline into Kingston.

Now expecting 10 - 25cm along with blowing snow!

Details:

Winter storm expected this evening to Saturday morning.

Hazards:
Heavy snowfall with total accumulations of 10 to 25 cm.
Peak snowfall rates of 5 to 8 cm per hour.
Strong wind gusts resulting in significantly reduced visibility in blowing snow.

Timing:
This evening to Saturday morning.

Discussion:
Snow heavy at times is expected to transition to periods of rain tonight as temperatures rise above freezing. Strong southeasterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h will combine with this heavy snow to cause significantly reduced visibility at times.

In the wake of this system, much colder Arctic air will become established across the region. A multi-day lake effect snow event is expected for locations east of the Great Lakes bringing additional snowfall accumulations to some communities.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

⚠️ BLIZZARD RISK TONIGHT

📅 Friday, January 12, 2024

FULL FORECAST: https://instantweatherinc.com/ontario/forecast/2024/1/11/snowstorm

——

We've received many inquiries about the expected start times for the upcoming blizzard in different regions.

Here's a region-based breakdown of the estimated timing. Please note that these are estimates, and actual start times may vary by a few hours. However, this should give you a general idea of when to expect the worst conditions.

The blizzard is expected to begin in Deep Southwestern Ontario in the late afternoon or early evening. Areas like Windsor, Chatham, and Sarnia will likely see conditions worsen between 5-7 PM.

Once the blizzard conditions arrive, they will last for one or two hours before gradually reducing in intensity with moderate snow continuing into Saturday. Although the wind will remain a concern throughout the night so expect some blowing snow.

As the heavy snow band moves northeast, it will reach the London, Kitchener, and Goderich area shortly after dinner. The GTA, Hamilton, and Niagara regions should brace for the blizzard around 8-9 PM. Note that some of these areas might have mixed precipitation, which could reduce the severity of the blizzard.

Later in the evening, Central Ontario, including Simcoe County, Kawartha, Peterborough, and Muskoka, will experience heavy snow and strong winds. This is expected to start between 9-10 PM in the south and around 11 PM in the northern areas.

Eastern Ontario, including Kingston and the Ottawa Valley, will likely see the blizzard start around 10 PM and around midnight, respectively.

Since it's not feasible to include every location in our graphic, we recommend using the closest listed location for guidance.

Stay safe! We'll continue to provide updates throughout today and the night.

BLIZZARD RADAR UPDATE

⏰ 3:18 PM - Friday, January 12, 2023

The storm is at our doorsteps and it’s a few hours early! We didn’t expect the initial bands to arrive until 5-6 pm. But looks like Windsor and Sarnia is beginning to see the heavy snow shortly, if not already

Detroit = Windsor (The map defaults to the larger city in an area)

Lots of snow over Southern Michigan tracking towards us. This is what will bring up the significant snow in some parts of our region over the coming hours.

Also, we’re keeping an eye with the mixing around Lake Erie. As we mentioned, the potential for warmer air along the shorelines of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario could lead to reduced snowfall totals.

What are you experiencing?

9:51p WINTER STORM WARNING REPLACES WINTER STORM WATCH by Environment Canada

DATE: Thursday, January 11, 2024

(Locations listed below description)

Winter storm expected Friday evening to Saturday morning.

Hazards: Heavy snowfall with total accumulations of 10 to 25 cm. Peak snowfall rates of 3 to 5 cm per hour. Strong wind gusts resulting in significantly reduced visibility in blowing snow.

Timing: Friday evening to Saturday morning.

Discussion: Snow is forecast to begin late Friday afternoon and will quickly become heavy at times, before transitioning to periods of rain Friday night as temperatures rise above freezing. Strong southeasterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h will combine with this heavy snow to cause significantly reduced visibility at times. There is also a risk of a short period of freezing rain Friday night.

While the prospects for a winter storm are high, uncertainty remains regarding the exact snowfall amounts at any given location.

In the wake of this system, much colder Arctic air will become established across the Region. A multi-day lake effect snow event is expected for locations East of the Great Lakes bringing additional snowfall accumulations to some communities.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

P.S. Please, please we’re begging you: please read the entire forecast discussion. There are a lot of variables at play with this storm. We received many complaints with the last storm about how we were wrong. Yet, the vast majority of these people lived in areas that we said would be mostly unaffected. Suggesting that they didn’t read the entire forecast.

We go into extreme detail because it adds important context to the provided maps. The goal is to cover every potential scenario - forecasting isn’t a perfect science so we don’t claim to be able to give a precise forecast for every area. That way you are prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws our way. 🙂

We will be here throughout the day tomorrow to provide real-time coverage. And maybe even the first-ever snowstorm tracking live stream, similar to what we do in the summer!

If there are any last-minute changes in the models overnight or tomorrow morning, we will let you know.

Sorry for the delay in posting this update. We wanted to ensure you get the most accurate forecast.

Stay safe!
